As part of my review process, I like to test out everything I can think of and that normally includes some gaming. Let’s face it, it’s not a gaming machine. But you would be surprised what these tablet’s can run. So I test out various old and new games to see just what the X98 Pro is capable of.
I ran a few games to test out just how it runs and also compared the X98 Pro to the older Z3736F Air 3G. The results are interesting, same games see very little improvement over the older Atom bay Trail X98 Air 3G and others almost double the frame rates (War Thunder) Here are the videos:
And finally I did an HDMI test to my 2560 x 1440p monitor, multitasking test, 4k YouTube streaming test and a look at the temperatures too. Chrome also proved to me yet again why I need to dump it in Windows 10. It runs horrible and eats up memory with its memory leaks.
More X98 Pro videos can be found in the Teclast X98 Pro playlist.

Well, these temps are awful. Is it worth to wait for another cherry trail device (chuwi?) or just buy cube i6 air ($147 with coupon).

Chris what about battery life comparing to previous Atom generation ? I maybe miss something during reading your reviews.

Hi, around 4 hours gaming. 7-8 hours wifi, web and video use.

Hi my friends any news on GearBest coupon sale for Teclast X98 Air 3G 64Gb? It’s currently $189.99 I need for it to be much more affordable just like in AliExpress, which goes for $162.99 free delivery. Any coupon would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for the heads up Chris I will test the peripherals that I ordered separately for the X98 Air 3G and will tell you what works and what doesn’t (hopefully all peripherals will work). 🙂
Alexander Persson
Thanks for all your videos! Have you found any usb hub that’s works with the x98 pro?
steelicon
Hi Alexander Persson,
I think this will do you well but I myself have not tried it yet. I am in the process of ordering some accessories to go with this line of tablets.
Here is my suggestion: http://www.gearbest.com/usb-gadgets/pp_216189.html
Anyone else have experience on this peripheral?
Thanks!
Chris G
No, none yet. My hub that works on the X98 Air 3G and Chuwi tablets works for only a few seconds and then stops charging it. A real shame.

No I’m still working on the written review. I’m not sure if should hold off and review the international version with the official Windows 10 image and drivers. The tablet grading on the latest reviews is rated from 1 to 10 and it’s broken down into categories then the average is the final score.

When the x98 pro 3g or international version comes out, would you test World of Warcraft on it? On 800×600, I was able to run it using Linux on a Chromebook but I’m very interested in picking up one of these to use during my commute.

Great videos Chris !! I agree with you about games in general on the X98 tabs. Heck, I run Skyrim on my X98 3G and it’s VERY playable. Remember my comment before the X98 Pro came out. My comment was that I hoped Teclast would correct a design flaw on the X98–That flaw being it’s inadequate heat sinking of the SoC. Well it looks to me like they didn’t re-engineer anything, they just slapped in the new SoC in place of the old one and slapped in double density RAM in place of the old RAM. We know they didn’t change the case. It doesn’t mean it’s not a better tablet, it just means it’s not a MUCH better tablet, IMO.
If Teclast spent a couple of $$ re-engineering the SoC heat sinking issues, it could actually have run cooler than the original.
Chris G
It think it just has a copper tape over the SoC, ram and eMMC like the Air 3G. Works on that unit, but I think the 12 EU GFX cores are heating it up too much. I will have to open it up and investigate the issue. Maybe all it needs is a decent thermal pad to transfer heat to the metal case. But actually physical contact with both. Like what Cube did with the i7 Stylus.
Chris G
Some good news. I was wrong, seems my 64GB Samsung Evo microsd needs a format. The microsd card reader is wired up via USB 3.0 I can get upto 90mb/s read from my Sandisk 64GB Extreme card. So that’s good to see, I do remember Teclast saying something about upto 120mb/s on the microsd card slot. So finally I can make more use of the card and move some steam games to it, this sandisk card is faster than some eMMC drives.

Thanks for the great videos and articles. I’m becoming more and more interested in one of these tablets to replace my iPad!
I wonder if the fact that you did an English Windows 10 install and driver update has to do with the performance and heat problem issues. i’d really like to know how it performs in the original chinese version, and obviously more interested to know more about the units shipped with international English windows 10.
If anyone receives on of the international units, please let us know 🙂
Chris G
It might have something to do with it, until I get an international version it will be hard to say for sure. But it could be the first back has heat issues?
Ragnar Ironblood
Anywayz, thx for review, you’re doin’ a great job!
Ragnar Ironblood
So, meanwhile it’s not much of a reason to buy x98pro, since thermal throttling is a serious drawback. Let’s hope, that the latter revisions do better. I wonder, whether core m tablets suffer the same issue.
Chris G
Hi, maybe later hardware revisions might address this issue. It’s a shame it’s there or maybe I have a bad unit? I have order some more (for resale) I will test them when they arrive to see if they heat up as much!
William
i contacted bang-good and they mentioned that they’re expecting stock early next week (they mentioned around tuesday). i’ll be putting an order in, assuming that they’re the international version, and will pay extra for quick shipping.
i’m not too fussed about the heat, as i could open it up and put a larger heat spreader on it, and some better quality thermal pads to pass the heat through to the rear case. which would help significantly
Chris G
I’m thinking I’m going to have to do that. Thermal pad between the chipset and rear metal casing.
William
They also have a $50 discount of you sign up to their email list, and 10% off for your first order through their app!!!
Which all adds up to quite a nice discount :-p
