FNF iFive Mini 4S Unboxing & First Impressions

A commenter in the channel said why aren’t I reviewing tablets. Well, the answer is simple, most are now 2-in-1’s and then there has been a rather dry spell in stand alone tablet’s mainly 4:3 ratio ones. They just aren’t so popular anymore and manufacturers are moving away from them, expect a couple. But not to worry there are still a few coming here on the site in 2017. The FNF iFive Pro2 (9.7″) due to arrive tomorrow, the JDTab JD01 (7.9″) and this one here the FNF iFive Mini 4S, it’s a 7.9″ Android 6.0 tablet with the famous 2048 x 1536 retina screen. This one has the same screen as the iPad Mini 4 at under half the price.

The review is now online! iFive Mini 4S Review

My first time with FNF, and the quality for the price impresses. Full metal build, OGS (Aka fully laminated) screen. very sharp with 324 PPI and the Rockchip RK3288 another first for me. With the dated Mali-720 GPU. Unboxing and first look below:

So far it’s looking great considering the price of approximately $140 . It’s now only $124.99 at Gearbest with coupon ifive21 on checkout, so super cheap! My main concerns are battery life and GPU performance. The GPU seems to perform better than expected, the gaming power it has is still enough for all modern and demanding games to have at least over 30fps, with a few dips here and there. Battery looks like it’s only good for about 4-5 hours. More on that in the final review.

The ROM is great, 100% bloatware free gets my praise and no crappy custom launcher, all stock here. Lovely, it’s reasonably quick, a few little stutters at times. Ebooks and PDF’s look great on the screen, so does Chrome, YouTube and anything else.

The speakers are okay, not as good as Xiaomi’s Mi Pad 2’s, they sound a lot better.

So the Mini 4S is looking very good so far. Stay tuned for the full review in a week or so before I return, sadly to Spain. My normal review pace and the Denia new studio set up will be back in a couple of weeks if you were wondering.

  1. So glad to see a 8-inch tablet, especially with 4:3 ratio. Will there be similar models with Windows?

  2. Am I the only one here who prefers the wider, 16:10 or even 3:2 aspect ratio?

  3. Okay found it for $125 at gearbest here http://www.gearbest.com/tablet-pcs/pp_602714.html?wid=11 use coupon ifive21

    • Thanks, added it to the post for others, nice price and not bad at all considering what you get.

  4. The Galaxy Tab A was the second highest selling model in 2016. The first highest selling model was the apple iPad Air 2. Both of the highest selling tablet models in 2016 were 9.7 inchers.

I find it utterly weird that almost the whole Chinese market spent all of 2016 making hybrids. They are not less popular at all, but for some weird reason these guys didn’t make virtually any 9.7 inch tablets with cherry trail and 4gb, despite the fact the international market would have soaked them up.

And I bet they all took a massive loss in profits last year, trying to compete with premium hybrids like Lenovo and Surface. Where they smoking crack? Are they still?

Seriously what the heck is up with that?

    • The third highest selling was the ipad mini. In fact I bet 90% of the tope 10 were 4:3 ratio devices. I just scratch my head and wonder what they are putting in the water in china?

    • I think it’s mainly because they are following Intel’s push for 2-in-1’s at least this year should see more 4:3 ratio tablets.

  5. FYI guys… Now $129 http://www.banggood.com/FNF-Ifive-Mini-4S-32G-RK3288-Quad-Core-7_9-Inch-Android-6_0-Tablet-p-1119252.html BG has it now on flsh sale is it woth the price?

  6. Hi Chris, thanks for the great job all this while. I’ve been an avid follower of your site for months but never really commented before.
Have you come across the newly received “Cube iwork11 ultimate”. I think it’s a great new offering.

    • Cube iwork11 ultimate, I’ve reviewed the Z8300 version. Is there are new one out now? I haven’t seen it, got a link?

Essentially it’s like a refresh of the one you reviewed. Same Z8300 (what a let down), but with a transformer factor. The form factor and wacom is a deal breaker for me though. Waiting for your review on this one.

        • This is just the Cube Mix Plus with Z8300, not worth a review I think Chris? Same as the iwork11 ultimate review.

  7. Thanks for this Chris. I’m quite interested in 7.9″ screen tablets and this one ticks many boxes. Would you mind putting meassurements in your review(s) ?

I’m insterested in how the form facture compares to a iPad mini…

    Thanks in advance

    • Sorry I missed measuring the thickness as I’m missing a few tools here away from my normal setup. But I got a ruler and checked It’s 200 mm in length, 134 mm wide and only 6.9/7mm thick. Not as slim as the Ipad Mini 4 but still not bad at all considering the price.

      • Thanks for this Chris! Means it is very similar to Apple mini and their protective covers should fit… just potentially with some cutting for the buttons and camera

  8. Are you sad about going back to Spain?

    • Yes, I love being back in my country. New Zealand is great, for me, it’s the best country to live in and top lifestyle. I also received in the last month over 6 DHL packets, all tax-free just handed over to me. If I was back in Spain I would have paid at least 450 euros plus for them all in total in IVA & duty and DHL customs processing fees. Normally have to pay around 40-50 euros per delivery sometimes up to 80 euros and more.

      • Ahh, is it some trade agreement between NZ and China or is it just that DHL are more aggressive collecting taxes in the EU?
I’m located in Spain as well, though in the Canaries, so only have 7% IGIC instead of the 21% IVA, but comes from Sweden. I have to say that it’s a more laid back and comfortable lifestyle here in Spain than in Sweden though Sweden is way more technology advanced and everything just works. Here in Spain, most things will be done “mañana, mañana”…

        • Well if it’s under $400 NZD in declared value there is no tax on it. DHL Spain are also all about collecting taxes and getting their document and & processing fees out of us which are 15 euros and sometimes more like 22 euros + the 21% tax.

New Zealand is more laid back than Spain, be we are also modern and much more advanced than Spain. Very new country compared to Europe which helps.

Yes, Spain is normally mañana, mañana or they can get it for you in a a few days, which normally means at least a week if not more. Some many things there are 3rd world, but it’s still a great place to live, good weather, food and beaches.
