Last year I reviewed the Redmi Note 4, that one had a MediaTek deca-core Helio X20 chipset in it. Not a bad mobile for the price I thought. India recently got a Snapdragon 625 Note 4 version and just this month Xiaomi released the Redmi Note 4X, with the same spec, just a slightly revised rear alloy housing and Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset. My spec has 3GB of RAM and a 32GB eMMC for storage, there is apparently a 4GB/64GB spec coming. And a rumored Snapdragon 653 model, that hasn’t been announced yet. It’s price? $147.99 with coupon

First impressions:
- The build quality is great for the price. Feels solid, no flex or noise in the joints.
- The rear alloy backing has been ever so slightly tweaked, more rounded edges, it feels more solid and better in hand than the Redmi Note 4.
- Great looking IPS 1080p 5.5″ panel. No complaints. Good brightness, deep blacks and fully laminated.
- The phone has 2.5D glass it could be gorilla glass 3 or 4. Or Dragontail. Xiaomi hasn’t mentioned the brand.
- The ROM I thought would be the global version, but it seems due to my request of a factory sealed box it’s the Chinese ROM (Sell has to flash the Global ROM)
- The loudspeaker has some volume to it, but some distortion at 100% volume
- Loads of bloatware on the Chinese ROM, luckily more of it can be removed or disabled.
- Still using MicroUSB 2.0 ports! I would have thought by now it would be Type-C from now on as standard. Disappointing choice from Xiaomi.
- No signs of lag yet, I’m definitely keeping a close eye on this after my Redmi 4 prime showed UI and gaming stutters. (It runs the same SD625 CPU too)
- Camera quality is still very average and the audio quality in video has far too much noise cancelation with a low 96kbps bitrate.
