Nice, they are faster ones. I tested one a while back http://techtablets.com/2015/07/latest-teclast-x98-air-ii-hg9m-revision-tested-with-fast-samsung-emmc/

that plate you are talking about is the EMI shield, which although isnt 100% nessesary it cuts out noise, so you might get issues with wifi and 3G reception, amd it could interfear with other devices that are nearby

I have run Tabs without it, and have had no issues. I would rather have proper cooling, and take a chance for a little interference, which fortunately, I haven’t had. Its probably required to pass regulations.

The Air 3G has this, but the X98 Air II doesn’t, so I don’t see at as being an issue. All the Air II has is some thin copper tape over the SoC, eMMC and RAM.

yeah its not too much of an issue, as long as you dont use it near any equipment thats sensitive to electromagnetic interference.

so i managed to get it to play Crysis a few times, 1440*900 with everything on low, i got 22-27fps, which i thought was quite respectable. but the cpu’s hit that magic 86*C and throttled, so the frame rate will probably be 30+ once i do a thermal solution modification, weather that just be higher quality thermal pads,  or like you did with the copper shim.

Hello I hear you are talking of 14mw/k and 17mw/k thermal pad, where can they be found and how much they cost? Google didn’t gave a thing.

    Thank youyou

Edit: oops it’s w/mk never mind sorry.

Look up frozencpu and pccasegear. They can probably also be found on eBay.

thermal paste and a copper shim will probably be better for direct contact of the CPU, but between the coper plate and þe case, a high quality thermal pad will do wonders.

Yes well they did drop my temperature enough to stop any throttling and I gain about 16% performance according to 3Dmark11.

Just bought 2 40 mm copper shims. Gonna put one on cpu, then 17m/kw tape, then the other 40mm shim, then more tape to make contact to shell. I’m guessing this will kill any throttling whatsoever.

@yamvmax Not sure it will fit, you have to be careful with it being to thick as it puts pressure on the screen and it’s noticeable as the IPS will touch the glass. If I do the mod again I will add copper to the ram and not the eMMC. Remove the shield and use a thickerpad on the Soc and 0.5mm thick on the top of it to connect with the rear housing.

My X98 Pro (Int’l model) arrived today, Windows 10 Home and activated. Microphone issues fixed on this one (Sound good, skype works great)

Temps are still the same so I only need to update my review and comment that the mic issue is solved. It got up to 85 degrees after benchmarking and gaming for 1 hour and a half.Only 1 degree less than my first model. The eMMC is the same model and speeds are the same +/- a few mbs.

Edit: I just did a benchmark vs my modded unit and in the Resident Evil 5 benchmark, it improved the performance by 24%!! That’s pretty big. 19fps stock score Vs 24.1 copper heat sink modded. Video proof coming…

MAybe I will just do a single layer of the 40mm copper shim, That is twice the size of your 20mm. It should help cool that chip a little more.

@chris  what sort of battery life are you getting?  Battery Meter is saying i’ll only be getting 3-4 hours at 25% brightness when i’m on the internet with wifi turned on.

i’ve noticed that even when browsing the internet, the cpu turbo’s to 2.4ghz quite often, even with minimal load….  wonder if there was a new bios to be released, if that might solve the battery life problems…….
