I currently have mine set to the custom resolution of 1194×796 – which is what it did when I put in 1200×800. No UI scaling.

I can’t speak for how it effects battery life but my experience with other hi rez tablets is that it makes a significant difference. I have a matte screen protector that is a little grainy so I lose the benefits of ultra high rez screens, anyway, so I like everything larger: easier to navigate via fingers and I never need to dig out the reading glasses.

Feels more fluid to me, too. What made the biggest difference in terms of usability, though, was the touchscreen fix. Wow. Different machine and doesn’t feel “cheap” or underpowered  to me at all. Its amazing how much slight tweaks to UI accuracy can completely change one’s experience of the device.
