Even Microsoft says no one one should use Defender as only protection tool and that its only “first line of defense”.  Virus/Spyware detection is very poor in it and in test it didn’t perform that well. Defender got 0/5 stars in one of the latest AV-tests and PcPro gave it “not recommended”

I personally use F-secure Safe with their VPN service and I’m very happy how it performs. Previously I had Norton but it was bit heavy and I had some issues with it. After that F-secure Safe feels very light, simple to use and it does what it supposed to.

No it’s not the best but it’s by far the least annoying. I take the risk and just never install anything from untrusted sources. Served me well these past 10 or so years I’ve been using microsoft’s virus protection option
