Hmm, not sure it could be a faulty autofocus in the camera module. The OV 5MP camera isn’t exactly a first class camera but you should be able to take macros with it at least.

Root should not affect the camera.

I Have the exact same issue, i got a label in my pack stating manufacture date 2015-11-21.
The device came with Windows 10 home english and Android without root noor chinese apps.

Autofocus is really really bad, im not sure if it’s a plastic film over the camera, not that i can see.
