I have a tablet with z3735F and it’s not powerful enough to play HEVC videos. From the benchmarks around, Z8300 has about the same power as z3735F so I assume it is also unable to play HEVC videos (CMIIW). Can Z8500 or Z8700 play it?
December 13, 2015 at 3:41 pm #18437The Z8000 series (Z8300, Z8500 and Z8700) has dedicated hardware support for H.265(HEVC) decoding, the z3735f does not.
Since videos can be encoded in many different ways you’d probably be able to find a HEVC video that will choke any device built around the above SoCs, but for practical purposes I think you could get away with the Z8300.
If you’re looking at a battery powered system I’d be wary of battery capacity though 😉
Oh, and also make sure that the manufacturer hasn’t reduced the performance of chip to extend battery life, for example the Teclast X98 Plus might be unsuitable for your requirements.

I am precisely considering Teclast X98 Plus and Pro. I like watching movies/series on the go so the Plus’ battery life has been enticing for me, until I remember most of my new videos are in HEVC…
Thanks for the information!
December 14, 2015 at 3:08 am #18510You’re welcome. Please do remember though that I don’t know for certain that the Plus won’t handle your vids. I’m sure the owner of the this site would try some HEVC videos on his Plus/Pro if you asked him nicely, he seems very obliging 🙂 He did try the Plus with a 4k (vp9?) demo on YouTube on one review video but the results were inconclusive, could have been Internet issues or the CPU that stopped it playing well…
