There’s this ongoing debate in my friend group: can Ligue 1 ever be seen as “elite” if all the best players keep leaving? One friend argues that it’ll always be seen as a feeder league, while another says exporting talent actually builds reputation. Personally, I think it depends on how those players perform after leaving. What do you think?

I’ve seen this come up a few times, and the article https://www.getfootballnewsfrance.com/2025/ligue-1-and-frances-export-machine/ makes a solid point — France is respected for producing talent, and that in itself builds reputation. I once chatted with a scout who said clubs across Europe trust French-developed players more than from almost anywhere else. Sure, Ligue 1 doesn’t have the global marketing power of the Premier League, but in terms of influence through players, they’re huge. Just look at how many top-level stars in other leagues started in France.

I get both sides of the argument, honestly. You lose star power locally, but gain credibility globally. It’s a trade-off, but one that seems to be working.
