CHUWI HI12 Plastic Keyboard fix

Hi all, this is my first post but I thought I would share my experience with the Chuwi Hi12: Win10 only 🙁  and the plastic keyboard, serves me right for rushing into buying though, as soon as I received mine I saw that the dual boot was out…. I take no responsibility for any mods you do after reading this.

A quick note when I unscrewed my keyboard there was one gold screw that was shorter than the rest, if someone tries my below methods can you please note where it originated and let me know where that shorter screw should be.

Anyway I found the keyboard to be average at best, the wobble I got when the tablet was docked was shocking, so I decided to investigate and found the pretty average build of this version of the keyboard…

firstly I decided to remove the hinge cover off to have a look, it was secured with two Phillips heads, once the cover was off I could see straight away why I had the wobbles, the screws holding the hinge to the keyboard weren’t done up leaving around 1mm between the head of each screw and the hinge, doing these up with some superglue in the screw holes helped heaps and I recommend it if your is wobbly.

then I thought I would open up the rest of the keyboard and see if I could remove the counterweight and replace it with a lipo of some sort, I was expecting to see a slab of metal as the weight and only found a thin sheet of heavy-ish tin, looking around I noticed the hinge on this side was not screwed down completely and the screw heads were almost completely stripped out and the piece of tin when pressed would expose a 1mm gap between the head of the screw and the recessed holes in the tin, the bolts holding the tin were done up tight and could not be done any further, removing them I turned the tin over and screwed it in upside down, with the recessed screw holes now facing up I could tighten the tin down tight, eliminating the annoying flex in the keyboard whilst typing almost completely!!

so putting it all back together i only ran into one problem, the mouse buttons were really touchy on the torque that the two screws beneath were screwed in at, too tight or too loose and the buttons would stick and be unusable, this took a bit of trial and error before getting it spot on.

FYI chip for the touchpad controller reads

“NOVATEK, NT11004, 1520-BD, HQGR000.”

Thanks!!! That is very helpfull and i try to fix my hinge as well. Mine is also very wobbly.

My keyboard was just like yours, with the loose screws particularly on the hinge.

5 minutes with a little Phillips screwdriver, and it’s much improved!

Thankfully the new metal keyboard is much better than this junk, but for those that already have this one this post is helpful.
