Hi guys,
I’ve just received this tablet from Banggood (took 11 days with standard delivery from China to the UK) and I’m quite pleased with it.
One of the first things I did was to research root methods. I went with this Kingroot method and that worked well.
Because I’d heard bad things about Kingroot, I wanted to change the superuser app from the King version to the Chainfire version. I foolishly ran a script for another device designed to make this exchange, which resulted in me losing root access and having 2 non-working superuser apps on my device.
After several days of trying to fix this (by using the forum method mentioned below, retrying Kingroot or even attempting to reinstall Android itself) and getting nowhere, I eventually stumbled upon this iRoot tutorial. After running the programme, it has apparently fixed my issues – I now have root back and a single, working superuser app. Before I did this, I had disabled the kingroot superuser app in settings/apps.
With hindsight, I probably should have used the root method mentioned in this thread in the first place. I’ve used the version of CWM recovery mentioned there to make a backup of my current ROM, so hopefully I can undo the next thing I break with my tinkering 🙂
If anyone has a new Hi8, I highly recommend that they make a backup first before doing anything else. You should backup to an external SD card, as there isn’t much internal space available to Android and it’s not easy to access the backups anyway. I should stress that I haven’t tested the restoration of a ROM from CWM, but I can’t see there being a problem as it’s basically the stock ROM – if I’m wrong about that, please let me know and I’ll change or delete this.
