Does this tablet ONLY charge through mains electricity

No. Only through mains. I had the same thought but after using some of the tablets that charge via USB I changed my mind. A lot of them charge really slowly via USB which means that you cannot charge them and use them at the same time (if you are at 10% and plug it in to charge it will still die if you keep using it). They will run out of battery. At least with mains power this is not an issue (1A x 5V = 5W, 12V x 2.5A = 30W, 6x faster charging). Also I found out you can get 12V /5V battery packs which I will probably get later on which can charge laptops. These are a bit bigger but they can then charge anything.

How can i charge it in my car, and use the USB port at the same time?  I have a few 2x  2.4Amp  cigarette port chargers.. will that work for leaving the screen on, and charging and using a FTDI usb to serial port adapter at the same time? what type of cables do I need to buy to make that set up work so that the device does not drain to zero?   i.e for an cube iwork8?

I used the OTG chargers pictured above.. but I found after 1 hour the device was flat. even though it says it is charging.  i was just web browsing using a usb mouse, using wifi, and with screen brightness on 50%.  What a useless piece of junk this tablet is.  Bring back the DC port I say.
