External mic issue

I am trying to record something but when I plug an external mic into the headphone jack it is recognized (‘You just plugged a device into the audio jack’) but when recording the internal mic is always used.

I am a bit worried that I might have damaged something as I plugged in the mic with power on by mistake (apart from also accidentally pushing the live charging jack plug in – I am sure many must have done this !).

So if anyone has an external mic and a bit of time on their hands could they see if their mic is recognized and used please ? (You can use the inbuilt ‘Mic Test’ app)
