why would you not be able to plug in your mic with the tablet powered on? same with the jack. but, I digress, if you go into your program you should be able to set your default audio in device. also you can use windows sound manager. I hope this helps man!

Hi Mike, sorry I should have made it clear – I was using a Lavalier mic which is optionally powered (which most cameras that have an external mic option require).  It was this that was on when I plugged the mic in. It is only 1.5 volts so I hope I have not damaged anything !

As regards any software settings I have not been able to find anything much in sound manager.

The tablet has a combination headphone/microphone jack (TRRS style).  Unless you have a headset/mic combo cable, it is likely that your microphone cable has a mono plug and is contacting the wrong circuit in the jack.  (The jack is designed so that a stereo headphone being plugged in will “just work”, by putting the microphone on the additional contact)

You can buy a TRRS <-> 2x TRS adapter cable that will make the right connection between your microphone cable and the tablet.

    Example: https://www.amazon.com/SuperWhole-Earphone-Headset-Microphone-Adapter/dp/B0114AB0QW/
