First Impressions and heating workaround

Received this device with keyboard today and i must say that i am pretty impressed with it.

Single core performance of over 3000 on geekbench 4 makes it quite a beast for emulation (x3 the performance of a high end atom (z8700)

In order to remedy the issue with overheating on load, I opted for using the TCC Activation offset feature instead of disabling turboboost in the power settings.  Why?

Disabling turboboost only runs the cpu up to the base frequency which is pretty low (is this 1ghz or 1.6ghz)?

Usually by default the TCC activation offset is 0 and thermal throttling happens when temperature is 100-0.

On this bios, the TCC activation offset was already set to 10 which would throttle the cpu when the temperature reaches 90c (100-10).   I adjusted it so that the TCC Activation offset was 15.   What is the result of this?

I can reach up to maximum turboboost (2.6ghz or so) and temperatures even on full load will not get past 87c or so. (It will of course throttle by 200mhz or so where needed to prevent temperatures from exceeding the (100c-15) but overall this gives a good performance (On full load, average cpu is at 2-2.1ghz)   However this was only on CPU Benchmarks.

I am aware that gpu loads will affect temperature too as this is in the cpu module.  (I have looked through the bios and there are many settings, not sure yet at the moment on which settings would work in similar way to throttling gpu if temperature exceeds specific value)

Running the dolphin emulator, The temperature reached up to 92c  (Maybe the TCC offset somewhat helped,  There is more than likely some other option in bios to link the gpu temp to tcc activation offset perhaps?

I noticed that in the bios, when the overclocking section is enabled, it allows negative or positive offsets to cpu, gpu, cache etc.   This would pretty much do what intel XTU software does, so at some stage I may experiment with XTU, find out the negative offsets which are stable (To undervolt cpu, gpu)  then apply these in the bios to reduce heat further.    I am aware that there is a Thermal Hardware mod, but a bit worried that the heat may spread to the battery area (as this non localises the heat spread)

On question i wanted to ask is the following..   On some devices (such as gpd win) using the incorrect bios settings can cause the device to brick and no known way of resetting defaults.    Thankfully the cube mix plus has a bios reset pin,  Would this definately reset bios to defaults if i was to tinker about and somewhat cause the device not to boot/turn on?

Overall i am very happy with this device (having only still used it for half an hour or so)  I tried psp emulation (ppsspp) running a intense game (that would usually bring most devices to its knees) – god of war, and this ran silky smooth at full frame rate 60fps all the time  (Even my macbook air 2013 model with i5 4250u could not handle this well)

Do you have any updates on your device? I got my device last saturday and the thermals are looking so bad. Even watching a movie (1080p) makes it 70c+.

Do you have any advice for me?

And how to play god of war on this?

Hey Athish, I was facing similar issues with my Mix Plus before and did the thermal mod today. It’s really easy, and it now never goes over 50° in normal use and 70° in running both Prime95 and Intel XTU’s GPU stress test simultaneously. Before, it would just rocket up to 95° degree after a couple seconds of Prime95.

If you are not doing the thermal mod to the device, then unfortunately you will have to live with the high temperatures.   If you wish to sacrifice performance, then you can lower the power max or/and undervolt in bios.

However, after the thermal mod, what used to be 100c is now max 70c.   Usually on medium to high load it hovers between 50-60c which is very good

Hardest part of the thermal mod is actually removing the damn thing 🙂  Once you have done that, pretty easy

If quality is more important than price, try contacting newhall plumber . They’re a family-run company, have been in business for decades, and have an excellent reputation. I called them to repair old pipes in my house, and two technicians arrived exactly on time, explained everything, showed the problem on camera, and replaced it without any fuss. They have a 24-hour emergency service. Incidentally, they cleaned up after the repair, leaving not a drop of dirt behind. They also offer coupons for major jobs on their website, and you can save a decent amount if you print them out in advance.
