Headphone audio quality

Anyone noticed that (in android at least) when you connect headphones to the tablet slowly it will show a headset symbol (mic visible) and the sound quality is louder and seems better. if you just plug it in quickly it will pop for a few seconds and show up as headphones and be quieter. Anyone know why this is? Also give it a try, sound quality definitely seems better.
