Fantasy should be realistic. Otherwise it becomes a fairy tale! What is the difference between a fairy tale and a fantasy novel? The fact that you would like to be in a fairy tale, but not in a good fantasy novel. 🙂

And what helps you in creating realism in your novel?

Everything is based on the characters and the general laws of the fictional universe. But I don’t like to invent a hundred laws of magic, explain the existence of dragons, make characters evil or kind at the click of a finger. The laws of my fictional universe differ from the real world only for the blink of an eye. For example, the geography of my fictional planet. Yes, I do not know when the river turns and when it does not, and I do not know why this or that climate cannot exist in this place on the continent, but in this other place it can. But I don’t care, it doesn’t stop me from describing realistic relationships between people, realistic events, realistic politics. I always strive to show the reality of what is happening in a non-existent world, I am most interested in this. To be honest, most of all I don’t like books, reading which constantly makes me think, “could this really happen?”. Mostly of this kind, by the way, for some reason I come across detectives. Detectives are rarely realistic. So the fact that my novel is actually written in the fantasy genre does not make it completely unrealistic by definition, I hope you understand what I mean.

    Most likely Umberto Eco.

At one point, I thought that if you give this novel to a person who is completely unfamiliar with the history of our civilization, he will not understand that this is not about our world at all!

Who do you empathize with more – the man on the dragon or the man on the horse?
