Hi all.  I wanted to share how I installed windows 10 using the media creation tool.  It took me a few tries last night but I finally figured it out.  You need to make sure that your language settings are correct and you will need to have a usb drive connected with the on the go cable and also a micro SD card.  I don’t know the minimum size required but I used a 16 gb version of each.  Also make sure your device is FULLY charged, cause it will be running on battery during install unless you have a powered USB hub that charge it during this process.  I don’t have one and it was fine but the tablet was almost out of juice at the end.   I had about 6.5 gb space on c: drive when I started.  Download the 32 bit installer from Microsoft and run it.   It will do it’s thing  downloading files but eventually fail with an error message that says “unable to initialize the working directory”.  You may also get the “something happened error”.  It’s because there isn’t enough room on the internal hard drive C: to unpack the files.  Make sure you can see hidden files on your C: drive and copy the $Windows.~BT and $Windows.~WS folders over to the thumb drive.  Navigate to $Windows.~WS/Sources/Windows/Sources/ and double click setupprep file to restart the installation process without redownloading everything.   During one part the installer will finally tell you that you don’t have enough space on your hard drive and give you the option of using an external drive.  use the drop down to point it to your micro sd card.  From that point on everything should install fine, at least it did for me.  The rest of the setup process takes a long time (like a few hours in my case).   Your mileage may vary, and I don’t take responsibility for any ones systems if they get borked, but this did work for me.  Everything activated just fine, and I will actually  end up with quite a bit more hard drive space once I get rid of the windows.old folder that is left over from install.  Hope this helps someone out there.

I managed to run it without USB drive, had almost nothing installed. Running the media creation tool it filled up C drive to just 245 MB left, but went through the process. It just asked for additional space and I directed it to the micro sd card.

But probably due to low storage it didn’t offer to keep the few installed apps and programs I had, had to opt for a clean wipe. Not much of a problem. Starting up was a pain without a keyboard and with borked touch drivers. The first few questions until I could install the right one were cumbersome, find the right spot to touch (far from the actual screen location) to get the keyboard up, then use that with the mouse.

Anyway, everything works fine now. Safe way to install and keep Windows activated. Just install it right at the beginning.

I didn’t do a clean install, just did the upgrade cause I was worried about being able to activate.   The upgrade process kept the right drivers and the switch to android app, so I didn’t have any extra work to do after the fact and the touchscreen worked fine.   I think I will just stay with what I got now.  I don’t know that a clean install would change anything much, since I didn’t have much on the tablet in the first place.  I guess I must have had just enough on the hard drive to run out of room.  I tried just using the sd card first and it didn’t work for me.  Windows can be such a strange beast.  You would think that they would have figured out how to make it a painless process by now, but every upgrade since windows 95 has seemed to have some issue or another.  I really do like windows 10 on the Hi8 though,  it’s a good upgrade over windows 8.

    Hi,

is there any chance to install win 10, when I have the downloaded $Windows.~TMP  on a USB-Stick, but the tablet doesn’t boot to windows anymore?

    Greetings,

    Chris

On the media conception tool side, choose the correct description—ensure the system settings to double-confirm whether you’re administration a 32- or 64-bit OS. Then download & scuttle it. Though effortless, the tool has a numeral of gorgeous characteristics—including the capacity to basically upgrade the PC.

I installed windows with only the microSD card :v
no mouse, no keyboard, no hub lol It’s actually pretty easy…ended up with 12GB of free space..
and here’s a must have software for windows tablets : Touch Mouse Pointer
(after installing set the touch interface as “full screen” from the toolbar mouse icon.)
