For me the most interesting part is this, Apollo Lake will support SATA drives, PCIe x4 drives and eMMC 5.0. This means no more eMMC 4.5.1 bottlenecks and hopefully a nice boost too in CPU and GPU. And it supports Intel’s solder down Wireless AC.

Power wise, I hope a good 15% or more over Cherry Trail.

Intel are meant to be releasing the Cherry Trail Z8X50 refresh now, maybe they are going to skip it and release Apollo Lake instead, I hope so!

The AC thing alone is worthy of on upgrade. May be worth holding out any tablet purchase until they get that sorted because not having the latest wifi standard is unacceptable.

Wireless thing is becoming a bit of a joke, it’s only a few dollars extra for them. Xiaomi seem to be the only ones that have dual band on the Mi Pad 2.

A few bucks is a lot. Much of the presentation at IDF Shenzhen was about reduction of the BOM (bill of materials). I’m retired now, but I used to run a design engineering group for a major wireless semiconductor manufacturer. Every decoupling cap, and every chip, for sure, means a boatload in consumer electronics. Major product strategy could be determined by 10 cents of ASP (average sales price).

Chris, I love your site. Keep up the great work!

Would not surprise me. Lots of competition these days. People are buying Chinese for a reason and it aint for the build quality. Another factor I think to consider is that the average person doesn’t know what AC is. Even somewhat informed enthusiasts whilst knowing what the difference between an Atom and a Core M or 2gb RAM and 4gb RAM is, is completely in the dark over wifi standards. Its not even talked much in tech circles. So if these companies can save money on WIFI it makes sense they will do it, because there is no punishment for it. I also think these Chinese companies have probably bought a shit tonne of a/b/g/n cards and will use them all up before going over to AC. Its a shame because tablets without WIFI  are duds and a/b/g/n is like a speed bump. By the time they get to AC I wouldnt be surprised if we are on to the next standard (AX?) and they will again be behind the curve.
