Line In?

I am trying to capture the audio of a device using its 3.5mm audio out port. I tried connecting a male to male 3.5mm cable to the audio out port of the device and the audio port of the i7 Book, but it doesn’t appear to work. My MacBook has one 3.5mm port that can switch between audio out or audio in. Can the i7 Book do something similar with its audio port or it strictly an audio out port?

I’m not sure how it works actually. One would assume that there should be stereo in. I just remember reading that this cable worked on the i7 Stylus.

I bought one from a local online store, it was so bad I asked a refund, I got it and they didn’t even bother to ask me to send it back.
