hey all,
I have a 2019 mi notebook pro with the gtx 1050 max-q. I’m having an issue with a usb-c hub (rated for 100w pd) that I started using a couple of weeks ago. I plug the hub into the charger port, and into the hub goes the charger, an external monitor (hdmi), wired internet, an external drive, a cooling pad (drawing power from usb) and a keyboard and mouse. everything works fine (the laptop even charges fine through the hub) until I start a more demanding game: I get terrible performance when running off the hub.
After many hours of testing everything (and looking at task manager and GPU settings) I have narrowed down the issue to the power supply not getting through enough power to the GPU probably (task manager shows it working 100% when the same game run on the charger alone makes it run on 60-70% with better fps). I have tested it with another charger as well, without the hub: same bad performance (it is the smaller charger that came with the mx250 laptop). I have also noticed that I only get the 90w charging popup when charging through the hub or using the smaller charger, but not when directly charging with the laptop’s original charger.
Performance is also good when no charger is plugged in at all, which I find a little weird.
So far I have tried every combination I could think of, removed everyhthing that draws power from the hub (cooling pad, hard drive, etc.), nothing happened.
Is there a way to fix this? are there some settings I could try? or would buying a more powerful power supply/another hub work?
