Our warehouse alarm went off last week, and three managers gave three different instructions. Everyone got out, but nobody felt confident afterward. Anyone got a good read on what public safety leadership can teach private companies about managing risk and earning trust? I’m helping update our response plan and want something beyond another checklist.

Three managers giving three instructions is worse than no instruction, because people stop trusting any of them. I saw this at a distribution centre during a smoke alarm: one supervisor said evacuate, another said wait by the doors, and a third started checking offices. Everyone got out, but the debrief was uncomfortable. This piece by Frank Elsner on why organisations are unprepared for crises is a strong fit for what you’re describing. For your plan, name one incident lead per shift, agree a single communication channel, and practise short scenarios where managers have to coordinate rather than improvise.
