Hi,
I bought the 5S yesterday, it’s already shipped so maybe I can get it this week or in the beginning of next Week (dhl from UK to Portugal).
I plan to install Linux on it.So for both of us (although they are different devices), the first step will be:
Boot via USB.
Maybe you could try, the following steps:I would say to just take some pictures of menus and options and upload here, so anyone could help or confirm the right options.
To create a UEFI USB bootable pendrive, it should be formatted with GTP Partition Table (you could do that with RUFUS on windows). As soon as You create the UEFI bootable usb drive, and can entering BIOS to enable all the needed stuff for the bios to detect your USB Pendrive, you should be ready to, at least, boot from it.
Another tricky thing is that (from what I’ve read) this devices usually only detect 32bit UEFI Boot loader.
You might need to copy a file to the usb drive: http://askubuntu.com/questions/775498/ubuntu-on-32bit-uefionly-based-tablet-pc/775507I’m not sure if this step is only required on older tablets.
I think that a good idea even before try a USB boot, is to know How can we do a full backup (maybe with acronis or something similar) of the eMMC, so that if needed we could restore the whole thing back. Maybe this should go on a specific Topic?
PS: Take a look at PhoenixOS. No live boot option, only instal, but It will be a better choice when we know how to install it!
September 28, 2016 at 3:24 am #51056I think there are plenty of tutorials instructing the installation of Remix OS, even in UEFI format.
Phoenix OS was considered once. But I found Remix OS would be more like windows 10 system, easier to be used for me.
The tablet would be looked as an ordinary computer. So I will try the USB boot first for testing the usability as:
If it runs smoothly, I would install remix OS instead making a trial on phoenix OS.
Also, I wonder that the micro-usb port is useless in charging. No any percent of power is charged. I am testing to charge 5SE after complete shut-down.
Thanks for your sharing.
September 30, 2016 at 1:55 pm #52228Any news on this?
I’ve received my 5s today, will play with it in the weekend. For now I only booted a live version of Linux Mint 18 without any trouble (in boot process) but lacking wifi, sound and touch.
A complete disaster when compared the chuwi for example. As your is an SE maybe the hardware is different.
October 3, 2016 at 7:35 am #52572I didn’t have any spare USB flash drive for the trial.
I searched some Chinese forum mentioning that it will brick the Windows system when android os is installed.
don’t know I should keep trying or not.
October 3, 2016 at 8:21 am #52575Hi,
in my 5S I had no problem at all.
I made some tests during the weekend and I’ve successfully installed (so then I got dual boot option) mint, ubuntu, remixos and deepin linux (a very eye candy Chinese linux distro that will be very good for a tablet due to size and layout of everything!!!).Off course I installed them one over the other while trying to get something, but all the same:
No wifi, no sound, no touch.
I got some drivers, tried to load them, even changing things in bios from acpi to pci , but got nothing 🙁And if form optimizing you want some more speed, I don’t know about yours, but my 5S have no power plans to choose (battery save, balanced or performance). To have them you should run regedit and disable connected standby:
Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power
and change the value of CsEnabled from 1 to 0 (zero).
You will lost sleep option at power off, but will gain a boost in performance if needed.
October 4, 2016 at 12:58 am #52615How does the success mean by? Following the official guideline for installation? Or run the second OS as normally expected?
How does the boot option be? no one-press boot, right? Need to restart the tablet and boot to another OS by entering the BIOS setting each time?
Or the remix OS embedded the dual boot method once the tablet turns on?
For optimization, I am not searching for “performance”. No demanding on high performance with such low-ended spec.
But I am seeking for better battery life, longer power usage; and also how to tune the tablet runs smoother and more accurate.
Perhaps, maybe I am looking for some patches fixing here and there: Wifi strength, speed of TF card read, touch accuracy in four corners, etc.
Thanks!
October 4, 2016 at 8:35 am #52621By success I mean install an alternative OS and having at least wifi and touch.
Obviously no one enter in UEFI boot options manually. That’s not a good installation of a new OS.
Look at my Jumper 5S showing grub and booting into Linux as expected: https://youtu.be/-sEVaqJ8i0sIf you seek better battery life and that stuff, stay away from Linux, because it will be a lot worse than windows due to lack of drivers and overall support for such platform.
I will run faster and smoother, but will not save your battery for sure on this device. That suggestion I gave you always enable you to use Power Saving Mode.
Perhaps, maybe I am looking for some patches fixing here and there: Wifi strength, speed of TF card read, touch accuracy in four corners, etc.
Yes, I’m sure that’s the case. I’m sure there are things that can be done on Windows, in a more standard way and not device specific.
Sorry if I misunderstood your concept of optimization when I saw RemixOS.October 4, 2016 at 10:44 am #52623May I know how do you install RemixOS? Follow the RemixOS official installation instruction?
How about the dual boot method between RemixOS and Windows 10?
October 4, 2016 at 12:32 pm #52628I just installed as usual, following on screen instructions.
I don’t even use their method for creating a bootable USB, I just use the ‘dd’ Linux commandOctober 6, 2016 at 3:03 am #53016Thank you for your sharing.
So you got wifi and touch running normally?
How about sound?
