Remix OS/Windows 10 Anniversary update installation

I reset my iWork Air at the weekend to include the Windows 10 anniversary update and changed to use Remix OS as follows if anyone is considering this.  I run Remix OS on a 4 Gb partition as I only use the Android partition for streaming using SPMC and that allows plenty of space for buffering.  The Windows partition is now about 20 Gb and after the anniversary update it has about 10 Gb free.

Pre-requisites:
(1) Powered USB hub
(2) USB keyboard
(3) 1 USB key at least 8 Gb in size
(4) 1 USB key at least 16 Gb in size
(5) Micro SD card with at least 16 Gb free with the Windows 10 Anniversary update downloaded from https://www.google.ae/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0ahUKEwjz1ov_tcvQAhUKIcAKHfDxA1QQFggZMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fgo.microsoft.com%2Ffwlink%2Fp%2F%3FLinkId%3D821403&usg=AFQjCNHD4uWYsmEJZ7F-FOoSNqvvs8zLbw&bvm=bv.139782543,d.ZGg&cad=rja
(6) Download the stock firmware from – http://techtablets.com/2016/01/cube-iwork8-ultimate-gets-dual-boot-files-and-how-too/#
(7) PC or Laptop with following installed:
(7a) Intel android driver installed from https://software.intel.com/en-us/android/articles/intel-usb-driver-for-android-devices
(7b) Android SDK tools installed from https://developer.android.com/studio/index.html
TWRP files for iWork Air 1TF from http://www.modaco.com/forums/topic/377298-recovery-twrp-302-0-for-cube-iwork8-ultimate-iwork8-air/

1) Create the Stock Android installation USB key:
(a) Insert USB key with at least 8 Gb in size in laptop.
(b) Launch command prompt as administrator.
(c) prepare the disk as follows:
Launch diskpart
list disk and note the number of the USB disk
select disk # (where the number is the one listed above).
clean
create partition primary
format fs=fat32 quick
active
assign
exit
(d) In File Explorer rename the USB disk to UUI
(e) Open the firmware zip file and copy everything from the 安卓 folder to the USB disk.
(f) Open the USB disk and delete the file gpt.bin
(g) Download the resized android partition files from https://mega.nz/#!bFYiDTja!Bhcb2rzs9cCJiClECSyWOY0F9QZycCNNczAC5LLSGGI
(h) Open the downloaded zip file and extract the file gpt_04g.bin to the USB key
(i) Rename the file on the USB key from gpt_04g.bin to gpt.bin

2) Create the stock Win10 installation USB key:
(a) Insert USB key with at least 16 Gb in size in laptop.
(b) Launch command prompt as administrator.
(c) prepare the disk as follows:
Launch diskpart
list disk and note the number of the USB disk
select disk # (where the number is the one listed above).
clean
create partition primary
format fs=ntfs quick
active
assign
exit
(d) In File Explorer rename the USB disk to WinPE
(e) Open the firmware zip file and copy everything from the Win10 folder to the USB disk.

3) Root the tablet.
(a) Boot the tablet in to android OS
(b) Enable developer settings by clicking ‘Settings -> About tablet -> Build number’ several times. Enable ‘Settings -> Developer options -> OEM unlocking’ (not sure if necessary) and ‘Settings -> Developer options -> Android debugging’.
(c) Plug in your device via USB cable and open command prompt as an administrator (Windows). Boot device into bootloader by executing

adb reboot bootloader

Note – You can also boot to bootloader by holding volume down button in dual boot menu and selecting to boot to Android.

(d) When bootloader is visible on tablet execute the command in the command prompt:

fastboot oem unlock

Menu appears on the device warning that unlocking the bootloader will erase the device. Use volume keys to select the option to approve and use power key to confirm. It will try to format the data partition but fails because the bootloader is pretty useless (see below). Bootloader will be unlocked, though.

(e) Install TWRP

Download both TWRP recovery image and TWRP flashable zip from this post http://www.modaco.com/forums/topic/377298-recovery-twrp-302-0-for-cube-iwork8-ultimate-iwork8-air/ Save the TWRP flashable zip to your device’s sdcard. Save the TWRP recovery image to a place you can access in terminal window.
2. Change into the directory you saved the TWRP recovery image, boot to bootloader as above, and execute

fastboot boot recovery-twrp3020-cht_cr_mrd.img

3. Install TWRP flashable zip from sdcard once booted to TWRP.
4. Reboot recovery.
5. Backup current partition layout using TWRP.

4) Flash the tablet:
(a) Boot the tablet to Windows
(b) Copy the BIOS directory from the firmware zip file to the C:\BIOS folder on the tablet
(c) On the tablet open the command prompt as an administrator
(d) Navigate to C:\BIOS (C:, then cd\bios)
(e) Run 1_flash.bat – let process complete.
(f) When complete power off tablet and charge it

5) Install stock android OS:
(a) Charge the tablet to at least 80%
(b) Connect tablet to powered usb hub
(c) Connect USB keyboard to powered USB hub
(d) Connect Android USB key (called UUI) to powered USB hub
(e) Power on the tablet and press F7 repeatedly to bring up the boot menu and select the Generic USB UEFI shell option (alternatively press Esc on the keyboard when booting and from the save and exit menu select Boot overide and then the Generic USB UEFI shell option)
(f) The Android flash will then start.
(g) Once done the tablet will boot in to the stock Android screen.
(h) Charge the tablet to 100% then power off.

6) Install Remix OS:
(a) Install Remix OS as per the procedure here and apply the 1TF patch and then install SuperSu.
(b) When booting to android Remix OS will now be available so enter and log in with google account.
(c) Charge the tablet to 100% then power off.

7) Install base Windows 10:
(a) Ensure tablet is fully charged
(b) Connect tablet to powered usb hub
(c) Connect USB keyboard to powered USB hub
(d) Connect Android USB key (called WINPE) to powered USB hub
(e) Power on the tablet and press Esc to enter the BIOS.
(f) In the Advance menu of the bios. Enter System Component. Find OS IMAGE ID and change it from Android to Windows 10. Press F4 and save and exit.
(g) Follow the procedure here from http://techtablets.com/2016/01/cube-iwork8-ultimate-gets-dual-boot-files-and-how-too/ using steps 14 to 16 to complete the Windows 10 installation.
(h) Change language settings to suit.
(i) Charge the tablet to 100%.

DO NOT CONNECT TO WIFI YET !

8) Install Windows 10 anniversary update.

NOTE THE ANNIVERSARY UPDATE CAN TAKE UP TO 9 HOURS TO INSTALL SO ENSURE YOUR TABLET IS FULLY CHARGED AND CHARGING.  If the installation fails it will revert to the previous base Windows 10 installation.

(a) Remove USB hub from tablet
(b) Connect charging cable to tablet
(c) Insert the MicroSD card with the Windows anniversary exe Windows10Upgrade28084.exe and at least 12 Gb free space
(d) Connect to wifi
(e) Launch the Windows10Upgrade28084.exe from the MicroSD card.
(f) Select the defaults – if prompted that there is not enough free space select the MicroSD card and refresh.
(g) Allow the update to complete, it will take about 9 hours.
(h) Reboot when complete and customise as you wish.
(i) As I was not going to revert to basic Windows 10 I cleaned up the disk to remove the previous installation by using the DiskCleanup tool and now have 10Gb of free space on my Windows partition.

Pd: any case you know any tutorial on how to keep just windows and merge all partitions under win 10 anniversary?

Hi Phillip.  Thanks for your post.  You have done exactly what I have been looking to do for quite some time now.  I was wondering if you might have some insight if there may be an easier route for me to get where you are.  I presently have my Cube iWork8 ultimate with TWRP installed and RemixOS installed and running and windows 10 installed and running.  I would love to just somehow accomplish the partition resize without completely starting from scratch and I was wondering if you might know of a way for me to do that?  If not then can you guide me through your directions a bit and explain which steps I might be able to skip since I already have TWRP installed.  Thanks for any guidance you can give.

Ok just to let you know where I am at.  I am almost there.  It took a bit of finagling, maybe because I already had TWRP and remix is installed.   So I just started with installing original android with you gpt_o4g.bin.  It installed but it somehow wiped out TWRP so I had to reinstall that and then put Remix OS back.  Which is all good now.  Now when I am trying to install Win 10 it seems like the install is not seeing the 16gb Ntfs thumb drive as I get an error that it cannot find \scripts\main.cmd.  I thought maybe it was because it was Ntfs format and windows isn’t installed yet so I tried formatting fat32 but then the install.wim is 6gb too large for single file under fat32.  Any ideas?  I am so close!!!  Lol!!!

Finally figured it out!  Had to be NTFS GPT!!!!!!!  Dopey me!!!! Anyway windows 10 is installing and the last piece of the puzzle is anniversary update.  I will let you know how that goes.

Is there any way to complete this tutorial without a Micro SD card? Can another USB stick be substituted? My Micro SD card is jammed in the slot and I can’t get it out…

if it’s actually jammed .. if it’s just flush with the slot something like a finger nail to push it in further and eject, or if caught on inside of plastic maybe an exact-o knife to straighten, unsnag and release.  there are such things as low-profile sd cards just for tablets btw

however — you should skip the win10 1607 update part anyways I think — it will come through after you setup your pre 1607 windows as a giant update, and you will more than likely need to free some room depending on how you set things up (well, clean up temp files and uninstall any bundled apps, okay …) .. asks for external storage.  I ended up using a usb drive myself for the *update* instead of an ‘addon’ish installation from modern windows install media.  usb is faster than sd anyways!!

shouldn’t take 9 hours.  try 1.

like to add that yes, flashing the android (or remix even) firmware erase all known partitions .. and well also at the same time overwrites any of the twrp stuff because that part of the ‘whole dual flash’ has the stock bootloader in it .. so it really should be stock android or remix, then root or windows 10, bios will go from any working windows

what have you done? why is windows missing?

cube’s supported method is from the windows program included, there are files in the bios package that lead to believe flash from efi shell is possible, but that doesn’t mean that cube’s efi will want to do that for us

android or in this case remix. THIS first half of the flash sets up more than just android. it defines most of the storage layout for later. partitions, much important information. and the boot loader, which is a misnomer .. this is a boot manager that is able to find your android and windows as cube expects them to be, and actaully finds _their_ boot manager/loaders .. and that whole thing is on its own partiton, and tied to the EFI system partition — one of the major difference between efi and bios is that bios doesn’t ever store any of it’s requried stuff on a drive, it’s all on the [small] flash chip. limited for how much code they can put in there ..

I’ll check what you posted, but it has to flash android (assuming remix) first, then windows .. if windows first, android flash erases knowledge of windows and only sets up for you to install windows next.

you know what’s wierd .. the instructions are for an iwork air and use the ult firmware that has bios in it, that will definately break some stuff .. windows learns of hardware different than the android .. have you tried a windows installation with a garbled screen and kb with usb disk and hdmi?  modify the stock main command script to run without interruption .. headless and hdmi on the way .. sheeit don’t remember if bios will output to hdmi, I think it does.

afraid to see what’s in the remix flash but that just looks all wrong — modified gpt binary, tantalizing — but ordering is all wrong.  what a runaround!

repeating random parts that seem to not work might work but, what if once was all that’s needed … dono no remix flash but stock andriod flash replaces gpt (guid partition table, any data is as good as released) so wipes everything.  someone get that — stock android flash does new partition layout, boot choice, android boot loader and all the android partition, and that gpt stock or modded leaves room for windows.

that means that stock flashed cleared all the effort from twrp and rooting stock android .. I don’t care how remix gets flashed but those things were erased.

instructions are to unlock _android_ boot loader (this thing has two and a half okay, I say 20) and flash twrp recovery over android recovery, and from the new android recovery flash a non-stock android

couldn’t see if remix is rooted — twrp can help with that

and further, get the remix from cube not a port from another device

I followed the steps and now I have a 4Gb partition for remix os and 20.9Gb partition for win10 with the latest updates.

But, I couldn’t install Windows 10 Anniversary with your way so I did it through windows update.

some problems:

1. when I restart remixos or win 10 and I select to boot remixos I get a message:
   ‘Unknown oneshot boot target: ‘Received ACTION_REBOOT.
   However, remixos boots after 2-3secs.
   Is this normal?
2. when I installed stock android, touch panel was not working. How can we fix that? For remixOs there is a patch, but for android…?
