Mark, Chinese tablets etc. are a gamble, they might not even work when you first get them. I wouldn’t advise risking it unless you have a backup device that is reliable.

Indeed, and that’s the plan to begin with. The root of the question is, do these thigns even lat long enough to warrant being a regular device? We replace our phones every couple years. If Chinese tablets cost half as much but last half as long, why not just buy something more reliable in the first place? Where’s our break-even point?

Well, you should be able to buy several devices for the price of a more expensive one.

As to whether they will work for you, there is a bit of gamble. Of my three Chinese tablets (2 Chuwi, and 1 Cube), all still work, they are between 4 and 1 year old.

Main issue IME is that performance and battery life are not very good, hey are “good enough”. The build looks fragile, but then again, if you drop even an expensive tablet it can still break, and after years of being lugged around, they are still working, so creaky plastic may not be so bad after all, hehe.

Upside of being cheap is that you are not overly worried about breaking, losing or getting one stolen. You can really take them whenever and wherever you need them. When the iPad leaves home, f.i. it’s always “with care” and “when really needed”. By contrast my Chuwi Hi8 tablet or Cube 2-in-1 leave home on a whim, whenever they have any potential use, and with less protection, so they end up smaller and lighter to carry.

If work’s paying, get a name brand, at the very least, it would be easier to warranty if you have issues.

I’d love to. But work’s only subsidizing PART the purchase of a new device, and TECHNICALLY they want me to get an iPad. I’m… creatively interpreting things because I could use a device and don’t want an iPad. So, for the cost of the subsidy, I’m getting a Hi10 Plus so I can still get a new device at little cost to me, and still have something to show for it. As such, I’m just hoping that the device will last me until the next time work will give me a subsidy. 😉

The only reason I’ve bought Chuwi tablets is for the dual full size USB ports, although the screen size/aspect ratio is also a compelling reason for the Hi12 and maybe the Hi10 plus. However, Chuwi tablets aren’t very good in terms of reliability or quality. Have you considered the Cube iWork 10? http://techtablets.com/cube-iwork10-ultimate/review/

If you are looking to get a keyboard please note that Chuwi keyboards are junk. I’ve bought keyboards for both my Chuwi devices and both had faults on arrival. Chris even had screws falling out of one.

All a bit of a lottery, My Chuwi Vi10 (Original model) Still works, battery is still good for two years. My Hi12 still works (First batch of dual boots)

And my Teclast X98 Air III (also well on its way to two years is still working) But yes its a lottery and a gamble with this cheaper tech. But remember that almost all of it is made in China even the big brands, but they have strict quality control.
