Thoughts after a week

Couple of quick observations for anyone on the fence about getting one of these. I have an iPad Air 2 so I have a recognized top quality tablet to compare it with.

Overall not a bad piece of kit for around 200 bucks. Build quality and fit and finish is better than I expected. Bit heavier than I expected but not too bad. Square edges took a bit of getting used to as did the power and volume buttons on the left side of the chassis. The case I bought with it was good quality but because of the button position meant it opened left to right instead of right to left. Never got used to that so dumped it and bought a Yoobao leather iPad Air case. Had to force it in but over the last couple of days the leather has stretched and it is superb. There is space on the left side so the buttons are exposed and the case opens normally from right to left. I’ll have to cut holes for the speakers and headphones but that is easy to do. Cost me 19 bucks.

Response in windows is better than in Android. I’m comparing loading CNN on Firefox and Chrome in Android and Windows and the iPad. Not surprisingly the iPad is the smoothest and fastest scrolling and loading, but Windows scrolling is almost as smooth. Android in both Chrome and Firefox is jerky. I enabled developer mode in Android and turned off animations etc, which makes everything faster when opening and closing apps but not the actual scrolling etc when in the app or website. I turned off animations in Windows which definitely sped it up.

Using Speedtest.net apps in Android and the iPad and the website in Windows I get almost the same ping, upload and download between the iPad and Android. The iPad is a bit faster download but not by much. Windows ping is 10 times slower than Android and upload and download is about 1/2 of that in Android. The driver is dated 5-15-2015. Not sure if that is the latest.

Screen looks as sharp as the iPad but has more of a yellow tint whereas the iPad is more blueish tint.

Finger tapping and dragging response in both Android and Windows is worse than the iPad. I’d scroll something and it would open a link rather than just scroll. Seldom if ever does that happen on the iPad. I put a glass screen protector on the Teclast the day I got it so not sure if it has anything to do with it. Was thinking of taking it off to test but I put it on perfectly, not a hair, bit of dust, nothing so I don’t want to remove it 🙂

Android and Windows recognise the 64GB SD card I put in. Windows is sitting with about 16GB usable space on C Drive. I’ve used a powered USB to drive a mouse and keyboard and they work perfectly. I’ve used a mini HDMI to connect to my 27 inch Dell and again it works perfectly. Unfortunately my powered USB will not charge the tablet.

If there was way to install a different version of Android without wiping Windows I’d try it as I don’t think the Teclast flavour is optimised to run as fast as it should. Its still very usable but slower than I would like.

That’s about it. I’m happy with it. I had thought that I’d use it and sell the iPad but I’ll probably end up selling the Teclast once I get a chance to handle the new Samsung Tab Pro S and see what the price is. Which in fact is probably crazy as it will easily be 4 times the price of the Teclast. In terms of bang for the buck the X98 Plus is a definite winner.

Received mine yesterday. Well packaged by OKQI, the box was in mint condition and included a free 16GB microsd. What with installing a few of my own essential apps and programs combined with two to three hours of constantly downloading updates in the background (including the 1511 Win 10 refresh), no wonder some users report the device as being laggy. I’m sure after a lot of tweaking, Win 10 will eventually settle down and the performance will be acceptable. The general build quality is good and the screen is brilliant. I agree with many of the comments made by needabottle.  I have access to a Nexus 9 8.9″ screen tablet and whilst it only runs android, thus far the Nexus 9 feels significantly nippier than the X98Plus and runs rock solid. Time will tell but while i enjoy fiddling around with gadgets, i need my X98Plus to quickly settle down as it has a job to do. In summary, i am glad i purchased it. The hardware is good but i was hoping the software side, especially Win 10, would have been a bit more the finished article. Already run into driver problems trying to get it to recognise certain microsd cards. To contrast, both my desktop and laptop have been ‘upgraded’ to Win 10 with no fuss whatsoever.

all of the touch screen issue raised from OP is due to the tamper glass screen protector.  I tested it out by have the screen protector covered half of the screen

; it’s clear as day the root cause.  I going to use it without the screen protector until I find a better one that doesn’t affect the touch experience.

So it’s safe to do a W10 update? do you use the 16GB Sd to do that? Just update and wait?
