Mr. Linux Compute-Stick (Linuxium) has put out a custom Ubuntu distro that may work better on Atom Cherry-Trail tablets.
It’s based on Ubuntu 16.10 Beta2 (kernel 4.8-x). I think it’s worth creating a Live-USB disk and trying it out. It would be a big help if the Realtek rtl8723bs WiFi driver is loaded by default on booting from USB. Let us know if you try it! And if it works for you, throw the guy a few bucks on his donation page…

“I’ve decided to re-spin my Ubuntu 16.10 Beta 2 ISO with a kernel that supports HDMI audio and wifi on any Intel Baytrail or Cherrytrail device. The kernel and ISO were developed for Intel Compute Sticks and this version hasn’t been extensively tested on multiple devices simply due to the fact that I don’t own them! As your mileage may vary depending upon device there are two options available.

The first option is to download my ISO and write to a USB (use ‘Rufus’ on Windows or ‘dd’ on Linux). You can then try Ubuntu and/or perform a fresh installation.”

    Hi,

as I said in Jumper ezpad 5S section, I’ve tried that, and got nothing more than with a normal distro.
I got some errors while it tried to initialize hdmi (nothing connected there anyway) but when I connected an external monitor it was not recognized / detected by ubuntu. Maybe if I boot with the HDMI connected? Will try today, as I have that iso installed on my tablet.

    😉

One Chuwi Hi10 user has tried it so far and it looks very promising. It’s the first time I’ve seen WiFi working during a Live-USB boot. And it’s the first time ever I’ve heard anyone reporting that Bluetooth is working from any USB or HD bootup…

    Hi,

I tried 16.04.1 LTS image from Linuxium website (https://linuxiumcomau.blogspot.com/2016/10/running-ubuntu-on-intel-bay-trail-and.html) and I can confirm HDMI audio, ethernet and wifi works out of the box. However, Bluetooth does not work.

I downloaded ISO image and have written it to USB with mkusb application (Under Ubuntu Linux).

I tried this on PCG02U Stick PC by MeLE company (on Aliexpress it is called Fanless Ubuntu 14.04 Intel PC Stick Star Cloud PCG02U Mini PC Bay Trail Z3735F 2GB DDR3 32GB eMMC HDMI LAN WiFi).

I also tried Ubuntu 16.10 Beta 2, but it does not boot.

    Regards,

    M.

Probably better you report this to Linuxium in the comments on his page: http://linuxiumcomau.blogspot.com.br/2016/10/ubuntu-1610-beta-2-for-intel-baytrail.html or perhaps on his G+ page https://plus.google.com/+IanMORRISON or Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Linuxium/
