The low profits also explain why firmware updates and newer versions of Android are almost never provided. The manufacturer has to be very careful to balance their ongoing investments in a product with their reputation and ability to sell enough units to warrant the cost of such efforts.
But certainly the $12 difference between a 64GB and 128GB eMMC warrants a higher sale price/MSRP. For example, when I purchased my Google Nexus 5 in February of 2014, I remember I paid an extra $50 to get the 32GB instead of 16GB version. That said, at some point the price creeps high enough to lose some of those impulse sales. It’s all a big game!
