Anyone wanting to run Linux on this. It looks like it can be done. A factor though is what BIOS version is installed in the one you have. Or, you can update the BIOS software from Chuwi. I think it is BIOS version v1.14… that has extra features that allow other USB boot options, not sure.
But here is a detailed blog tutorial on how to do it including updating the BIOS. He installed Ubuntu Gnome desktop but said it was a bit slow. In the comments he mentions having installed Kubuntu which runs better. For any/all other Celeron N3450 devices that will not boot Linux from a Live-USB I am pretty sure this is the key problem, related to BIOS and Grub2 (linux boot manager) problem. From his blog..
“Nearly everything is working out-of-the-box, except grub. You have to replace it by Refind.”
This seems the same as what Linuxium found in his testing a mini-PC with the same N3450 processor…

More detailed info can likely be found on Linuxium’s awesome blog site…
http://linuxiumcomau.blogspot.com.br/2017/04/creating-personalized-ubuntu-mint-and.html  Note in this last link where he says…
“The last issue I encountered was trying to boot an ISO on a new Apollo Lake mini PC. As the GRUB bootloader failed to boot Ubuntu I switched to using the rEFInd boot manager to allow Linux to boot itself.”

A guy on the Chuwi forum stating what he’s got working using Arch Linux distro –> http://forum.chuwi.com/thread-4015-1-1.html

What is working “out of the box” on Hi13 running Arch Linux (needed just add screen size to Xorg configuration):

    • Plasma desktop (I didn’t try any other)
    • Touchscreen
    • Wifi
    • Sound
    • Video HW Decoding (tried to play 4k demo – works smoothly, CPU load < 10%, compiled libva-intel-driver-g45-h264)
    • Rotation sensor

    Do not work:

    • Both cameras (found old drivers, didn’t try them yet)
    • Light sensor (found one year old driver, didnt’ try it yet)
    • maybe something else )

It would be very helpful if chuwi could provide missed drivers

    Hi everyone,

For those with a working Hi13 touchscreen in Linux, could you post or attach a copy of your dmesg output after boot to help the rest troubleshoot Linux setup in Hi13?

The command is “dmesg > /any-path-to-where-you-want-file-written/boot.txt” and you can upload the boot.txt to pastebin.com or to your post.

    Thanks in advance.

A new version of Linuxium’s ISO respin script is out.  Could be helpful for some having problems getting one of the latest Ubuntu/Xubuntu/Lubuntu/Linux-Mint distro flavors running… http://linuxiumcomau.blogspot.com.br/2017/06/new-functionality-and-simplification-of.html

Actually it was me, I have one with running Arch on it.

Regarding rEFInd – it is ok if you have attached keyboard, but useless otherwise. I plan to switch to grub, it can use volume up/down buttons for boot option selection but I do not have time for now.

    working Hi13 touchscreen in Linux

To get working touchscreen one should enable goodix module

I also experimented with installing Linux on the Chuwi HI13.

I got Arch, Ubuntu with Gnome and Unix(Unix has good performance) and Kubuntu to work on the HI13 with Bios update and Refine as Bootloader,

even Android was working after some problems. I’m relatively new in Linux and doesn’t have the best English(like you see…), but I did it with this tutorial:

    http://chuwi-hi13-install-ubuntu.blogspot.de/2017/04/how-to-install-ubuntu-on-chuwi-hi13.html

I had the hope that with Linux , the Hi13 would perform better and would be much snappier, but that became only partly true.

It was snappier in the os and Youtube performance became better, but Linux is not ready for Touch control.

Only in  Gnome, Unix and Mint(I read) onscreen keyboards are implemented and installing them is horrible.

I used Linux about a Month and deleted it and the Bootloader because of the small space on the disk, i only got 5GB on Windows free and on Linux just about 2GB.

But if you want Linux on your Hi13 then try the link i posted above its an detailed Instruktion.

So, i hope I bored nobody, because it’s my first time writing in a Forum

I don’t think this is true anymore.  Ubuntu with Gnome?  Also, Try Antergos 17.9 (the latest) with Gnome desktop.  It has an onscreen keyboard built in and a UI setup for touchscreen use.

Hello. I got a newer Hi13 with GDIX1002. No problem running all sorts of Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, openSUSE) except for the high resolution and no touchscreen. Today I reinstalled openSUSE 42.3 (for the moment on a USB key) and recompiled the newest kernel after editing goodix.o (replace gdix1001 with gdix1002) and everything seems to work when just started. The touchscreen support seems to survive lock but not sleep.

Combined with the relatively bad sensitivity when writing with the pen that limits the usability so far.

    openSuSE, Gnome 3, 4.4.92-1
