Hi Jamesk,
I just bought the Hi8 Pro and this adapter
http://www.banggood.com/4-Port-Micro-USB-OTG-Charger-HUB-Cable-For-Tablet-Phone-p-975460.html.
Its only a USB 2 and requires an USB C adapter.
Most searches I have done on the internet regarding hubs for the Hi8 Pro is that USB 3 hubs do not appear to work on the Hi8 Pro. One person says this worked on his device
I cannot purchase this in Australia to test this device. I have bought another USB 3 hub which is powered and will test it when it arrives.
I found that I had problems initially with my adaptor, it gave a USB device error, device descriptor failed. To fix this I went into device manager, clicked on the device error, choose update driver software, then browse my computer for driver software, then let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer, then click on the device in the window to install the driver. It then should show Generic USB hub and you can connect your USB Flash drive. If it still doesn’t work, remove and reinstall the Intel USB 3 Hub controller driver. If the same device descriptor error returns, or it will not read your USB flash drive, then follow the same instructions to re install the driver until it shows Genric USB Hub, then reinstall the driver for the generic hub. My adaptor now works each time I plug it in. Sadly it doesn’t provide enough power to charge the battery at the same time as reading the flash drive, even though the charging light is on.
It appears a powered hub is required to connect USB devices to the Hi8 Pro, I am guessing that the Hi8 Pro cannot provide enough power via the USB C port.
Regards
Anthony
May 6, 2016 at 1:26 am #36228Hi Jamesk,
My USB 3 Hub arrived today, it works un-powered. I plugged it in it is recognised and was able to read and write to several different brands and size USB 2 Flash drives. I don’t have any USB 3 devices to test. I have not been able to test if this hub will charge the Hi8 Pro as it does not come with a power supply and requires a 3.1mm jack connection. When I am able to get one I will post the results.
So it seems you can run un-powered USB 3 hubs and probably the cable you first mentioned will work. I would recommend this 4 Port hub over a single point connection.
I purchased it on ebay:
USB-C USB 3.1 HUB Type C 4 Port External Compact Built-in Cable 3.0 USB-C PC MAC

May 6, 2016 at 4:39 pm #36282Hi Anthony,
thanks for all the great info! At this point I’m still looking for a non-hub solution, but I’m sure I’ll change my mind 🙂
I don’t have any usb 3 devices, just some usb 2 flash drives, and a USB->mini usb for dev on my phone, although I just got the chuwi to debug my phone via wifi, so I can skip the cable.
I’ve ordered the cable mentioned, and I’ll post back my findings when it arrives.
thx, ttyl

No worries, glad to help.
I tried a USB 3 Flash drive in the hub and its works.

This OTG adaptor works:

I managed to get the hub via USA and my nephew and can confirm it charges the unit when in use:
