Tldr: lost my win8 key, looking for ways to get to win10 just because

So after not being aware of the fact that OEMs store the Windows 8 key in the bios and then flashing my (new) HG9M with the bios (totally unnecessary) it seems I have lost activation…sigh. Tried Teclast support, left me to rot.

However, I do have a few windows 7 32 bit licences lying around. These should hopefully allow me to get a free upgrade to windows 10. Given that the tablet is just an intel x86 processor, this should be possible right?

Anyone have any insight/advice? Currently, the plan is to load a usb key with a win7 iso, install over the old windows 8 partition and then run aaaaallll the updates, grab the windows 10 offer, then install windows 10 (directly from the iso maybe, so it’s a fresh install?). I know the install takes a while and I have concerns about power/battery, is it possible to put the iso on an sd card and install from that while having the charger plugged in?

Assuming this works, would it be worth the effort (or the lols)?

It would be a huge effort, have you tried our CD key tools from the downloads section? One there should be able to extract the key from the bios. My 2.02 bios upgrade didn’t wipe my key. I don’t think it should. Only if you brick and then flash with a clip was when I lost mine.

Yeah tried that, it matches the key that’s being reported as blocked by the activation server.

Think I’ve found a solution: I have access to academic pricing, so I can get a cheap copy of Windows 8 pro from Microsoft for about $30. Hopefully the key will work straight away, otherwise a fresh install seems to be relatively straightforward.

    I’m open to ideas!

if you can get win 8.1 for $30 bucks do it. I loved it when I got win7 pro and office pro for like $60 total back in 08 -09 thru academic pricing.

Get it and you will be fine (if you cant retrieve your old key from bios).  I just installed 8.1 to my new air ii and also did the upgrade to win 10.

My plan was to install win7 home because I had one laying around unused, then do the upgrade to win 10.

I didn’t realise that 64bit didn’t work.  So then I tried to buy a key online….didn’t work…..so then I just went out and bought a retail copy.

I only bought the android version because I was going to save money but now I have spent $130 extra for an OS I didn’t think I was going to have to buy.

I could of actually got it cheaper if I ordered from one of the authorized resellers and waited a few weeks for it.

Not to mention I didn’t realize the x98 pro came out, so I could of just bought one of those win windows already.

I had to go through such a hassle to flash my air ii (HG5N), if I could do over I would of just spent the extra $50 and got a dual boot version…..lol I would have saved money hahaha LOL
