I don’t have random crashes like that in Windows, though it crashes for me regularly in Android when it goes to sleep. I’ve been enjoying the Windows side too much to dive into trying to sort that out, yet.

I’ve installed all Windows Updates, the Asus SoC drivers and used the Intel Driver Update utility mentioned elsewhere here – which updated the graphics drivers.  I haven’t done the heatsink mod, yet, so I have stock hardware.

I’ve also fiddled with the advanced power settings (as I detailed in the battery power thread) and rarely have the device in a full power state. The default power level for Intel Dynamic Platform was the highest available, Level 5, and I’ve set mine to Level 4.

I recall one or two crashes like that way back in the beginning but I started updating the drivers almost right away. If you haven’t updated your drivers you might give that a try.

    Tnx Chris

I already staryed updating drivers via the intel website. Only driver available was graphics driver. So now I am draining the battery until below 50% as i am sure this has to do with it. Ive read through other posts the battery status is involved.

I will try solutions one by one and then evaluate. Will tackle this! And if I do I will post here. From teclast we will not get this solved.

    Cheers

    Chris, Guys,

Bad news, the Graphics driver update was not the solution. On top of it I disabled all power save options.

The exact battery percentage for the BLACK screen of death is 40%. When it hits that number try to open an app, connect hdmi whatever: it crashes. Since Chris has similar issues in Android I suspect the Bios. Its just released this X98 pro.

Does anyone know how to even upgrade the bios and where to get notified about a new version? Teclast does not even have a support website!!

Chris aren’t you the guy who makes the video reviews as well?

So you have some power over them, sites like Gearbest.com use your video’s to promote the X98 pro.

Teclast does not listen to me. Worse: they dont listen to their chinese “complainers” either, I’ve seen the same problems on bbs.teclast.com on their forum but it stays unanswered.

Maybe you can do an update video review just short, mention the problems some of us have with it? I’m already 280dollars short including taxes etc, sending back for a refund *if it ever happens* will at least cost me the shipping cost, the tax I paid and a case I bought for it which becomes useless.

Man I hate this, I know I should have known could have known…but too late now….I got a Chinese tablet with Chinese quality and support standards 🙁

and can I ask you a big favour Chris…..? Boot for me to windows10 on your PRO, pull the plug, wait until the battery is 50% (just found out its 50% not 40 that is the starting point of trouble) and then…hit a random app or program?

If I do that then POOF gone it is……

    Hey mate.

The problem has been ridiculous for me as well. Yesterday when I received the tablet, it turns off to a blackscreen like yours when battery is under 40%.

I tried updating the intel display driver, it didn’t work.

Then I tried, disabling battery saver in intel graphic options. It worked. But only until today.

Now my tablet just turns off randomly no matter if it’s 40% or 60% battery. Really really annoying.

I have the K9C3 model. Which model do you have?

Do you think upgrading to the dual boot bios will help?

    Hi John

It really begins to piss me off… Being a design engineer myself I do not give up when debugging…Thought I found it in this chinese forum:

    http://bbs.teclast.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=517655&extra=page%3D1%26filter%3Dtypeid%26typeid%3D397

Some registry mod. I downloaded the script and executed it as admin ET VOILA! I could go below 40%!

Switched it to standby, left it for 2 hours, came back turned it on. It had 43%. Right when I was reading your reply: POOF gone at 40% aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargggggggggggggh…….. Really nothing seems to help……

Only thing I can hope is Teclast stops ignoring this. They ignore my messages for the time being. Both facebook and emails. Trying for days now. Even the chinese forum is full of it (if you can understand it after its been messed up by Google Translate haha).

I can kill your dream about the dual-OS bios: I have that… Have the latest PRO, think its K9C6.

Its a bloody shame, this aint exactly the cheapest available chinese tablet its Teclast’s flagship 🙁

I’m going to write some bad reviews now and spread the word on internet, maybe that gets their attention.

The problem seems so common that I dont believe its a hardware issue, I think its software or driver and this gives hope it will be quietly fixed by teclast without having to acknowledge the problem…..

Guys I think I got it solved!!

It was some processor power management setting in the tablet.

You can choose how Windows handles processor thermal issues. The setting must be changed from ACTIVE to PASSIVE.

This setting was not present at my tablet. Probably it is also not present on yours. So I had to first find out how to enable it. This has to be done in the Windows registry and I found a nice post on the internet which shows to do it automatically by downloading a .reg file that does it. Only thing to do after download is right-mouse click it and choose MAKE. Then reboot and its available. Details here:

    http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/51043-power-options-add-remove-system-cooling-policy.html

The next step is change the setting to passive, which is described here:

    http://superuser.com/questions/655733/how-to-disable-software-initiated-overheat-shutdown-due-to-broken-sensors-in-w

After doing this when I got to my critical 40% battery level I hear some high frequency sound, probably some electronic ciruit kicking in. BUT THE TABLET STAYS ON!! Probably this was what triggered my tablet to BLACK SCREEN.

I could even reboot the tablet while the battery was only 33%. Windows loaded again and I could start an app without crash! So very happy.

    OTHER INFO:

-charging the tablet in Android mode goes way faster….

-there definitely is some power issue in windows. I connected a power voltage/current monitor and I saw that during the charging in windows it took 2.4Amps of current all the time! Thats over the 2A rating of the charger…. Typical Chinese to supply a charger that does not cut it… This also explains why after a crash the tablet does not come on and maybe after some waiting it does…Probably the tablet draws then even more current then 2.4A (had no chance to test because my problem is solved!!)

So what I did is find on ebay a 3A charger and hope this also makes it charge faster. I think the original charger is not even safe to leave unattended, its too heavily loaded and heats up. It will break down in a while I think.

I hope this info helps other users, I will start a new post with a subject everybody can find when searching for the symptoms I had.

    Damn.. it crashed again aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhh

Is there really nothing to do about this?

One update though… The original charger: throw away please….. I previously reported that the current shown on my USB tool to measure charging current was 2.4A. It seems now that the original charger is in some kind of oscillation because when I connect my lab-PSU and set to 5V the current meter shows 500mA. Which sounds way more normal… Then I took my wife’s iPad charger which is 2.4Amps and connect my powermeter again: same 500mA

So the original charger is not useable to charge this tablet, nice Teclast nice…….

    I’m using your method.

The tablet is working nice now. I haven’t had a crash even when gaming.

I’ll update here if it crashes.

Happy to read that at least somebody has his problem solved. I give up…….booted it to Android and WILL STAY THERE aaargh.

John, are u using it on battery or plugged in? Because my problem only occurs when I run on battery

I use it on battery. No problem whatsoever when plugged in.

My model is k9c3. After trying different things and even nearly bricking my tablet trying to flash android, I managed to recovered Windows 10 image of k9c6 model.

After that I let windows 10 update and use Intel update utility as well.

I haven’t had a crash after using your method. But I’m not sure if it will continue because when I add the additional power option using your method, the default option for battery is already passive. It’s only active for plugged in.

Also, in the intel graphic option, I just crank up everything. In 3d settings, I set best performance – override application…

In battery settings, I set to best quality.

Will update the status when I use the tablet a bit more.

Did some gaming when the tablet is over 50%. It overheats and gets up to 86 degree when gaming but no shutting down.

Now the battery is 20%, no crash.

You did allthe same as I did and I also had this battery option already set to ppassive. I hoped it helped Anyway

Now I think we have different problens buy with the sane shutdown result. Ido nothing demanding like gaming. Just switch on start internet then off etc. Even that I cannot do. Allthe sudden….poof

The battery isnt great anyway. Maybe I will quit the efforts and just use windows when plugged in to the mains power. My android is fine on battery.

    Keep you posted!

Ok I might just solved it yesterday. I played extensively with the power settings, especially the power safe option. This I set to kick in already at 60% and it seems the tablet is now “reacting less agressively” in windows saving the battery. And with the nice side effect that because the hits on the battery do not take place the tablet does not suddenly shutdown!

I’ve gone to 30% with the battery without crash, then boot to Android and let it drain under android until 20%. Then I fully charged it and went back to Windows, here I had 100%. Will play tonight after work with it again. Cross my fingers.
