When you say, “Now you can fit a 2280 without any issues”, which Chuwi device do you mean? (I have a 12,3 not a 14,1)

The mod with a 2280 M.2 SSD for a Lapbook 12.3 is possible and quite easy:

You have to shorten the metal weight at the bottom to gain the space for a 2280 drive. You need some spacer and a fitting screw to screw on the end of the M.2 device. The plastic piece glued to the metal bottom cover has to be removed to have enough space for the M.2 drive. I added some thermal pad to my SSD as it gets quite hot under load.

But so far I did not find out how to boot from the new big SSD and not the old small one. How is this done? Changing between the two Windows Boot Manager versions to be found in BIOS did not help.

I capitulated and finally did a clean new install: Booting from a Windows 1703 stick I deleted all and every partition on both SSDs an installed Windows on the bigger M.2 SSD. I then restored an AOMEI backup that I had made beforehand of the old eMMC installation. To speed up things I had copied it to the internal eMMC that now is my data drive.

I mean it fitted into my lapbook 14.1 with a bit a sandpaper on the case,  shaved off about 2/3 mm to make the fit perfect.  You never had to shave any but it fitted better with the shaving/sanding.

    hi Ernst,

I read your solution for the clone process and this is very helpful for all of us who want to upgrade the storage.

However i have a question. After removing the indexes from drive D in order to restore windows search functionality  to your new drive, have you tried to

boot to  windows from the eMMC successfully?

I have not used booting from the eMMC anymore since an SSD has been fitted. But don’t worry; when you would boot from the eMMC the deleted index files will be automatically re-created by Windows Search.

I can see the pattern. When booting emmc, index is created and then you have to remove index from m2 ssd to have windows search in windows 10 from the emmc installation. After this, when booting from M2, you have to remove index of emmc again as it had been created automatically in the previous emmc boot run. All in all is not a major hassle, as the emmc boot will be needed in rare cases, and furthermore the removal of indexes located in emmc, can be put in a batch file. I am considering of buying the transcend 256 gb M2. Its performance is tempting…

    thanks for your response
