I’m planning on installing xubuntu on my laptop. People who have successfully installed linux, how did you go about doing it? Also, is there a way to go back to windows if I decide the linux installation for whatever reason isn’t for me?

Before doing anything, download and install a copy of Macrium Reflect (Free edition) and make a backup of ALL of the partitions on your boot drive and put the backup onto an external USB drive. That way if you mess things up you can restore to your original configuration.  The method of installing Xubuntu will depend in part on which notebook you have, but I think the best help will be if you post this question on a Xubuntu forum.  If your notebook is a Cherry-Trail or Apollo-Lake processor your best option is to install a Linuxium customized “respin” of Xubuntu.

You could also try installing Manjaro XFCE which is light/fast and very similar to Xubuntu but is a rolling-release distro based on Arch Linux instead of Ubuntu/Debian and it’s  likely to have the most up to date kernel and drivers.  Depending on your notebook you might not need to install the rEFInd boot manager. Perhaps the normal Manjaro (Grub2 boot manager) installation will work.  I would install onto a USB drive first to test it and see if it works fine on your notebook before installing to HD/SSD.
Again, seek help on the Xubuntu or Manjaro forums.
