I think you did a neat job on your soldering. It’s likely that your green wires actually become the antennas. However, since no electricity runs through the antennas, is think it is unlikely that your mod is related to the circuitry burnout. Just bad luck and coincidence.

You should still be able to get wi-fi via a USB dongle in Windows.

By the way, I’ve found our tablet remarkably robust for opening up and tinkering with. Mine has been opened and soldered on a dozen or so times, still works fine.

Andy, sorry, forgot to mention. C2D4 is my model.

Vaeceslav, that’s a really good idea. I was wondering how to have an external antenna which is aesthetically acceptable!

After reading this thread and watching this video: YouTube I bit the bullet and opened my X98 plus II with the equivalent of a guitar pick. A couple of observations:

    – start with opening the case between the screen and the white of the back, away from the connectors, then work your way around; it opens very easily (take the SD card out first)

    – nothing connects to the metal back, so you can’t break any ribbon connectors or such

    – there is a surprising amount of space left inside, enough for an alternative wi-fi antenna, especially between the two speakers

    – 3 out of 4 screws of the speakers were loose, a bit of super glue and no more crackling sound

I’ve got two retrofit wi-fi antennas on order from AliExpress and will report back if these make a difference.
