Hi Tikilou, I tried everything you suggested, and I still can’t boot using the i915 drivers. I couldn’t enable this one because it’s not available with my BIOS version (Microcode Patch 35e):

enable manual security thermal inside Advanced => Thermal => Thermal failsafe settings => and on “Thermal Throttling Mechanism” and choose “TM2 Adaptative Throttling”

I hope Chuwi will release an update…

Hi Xjesus, I installed the graphic drivers as you suggested on a Chuwi Hi10 (single boot version, February BIOS) and it still doesn’t work without using the nomodeset option at boot. I guess they will work on the latest dual boot version, but with that version Ubuntu already works out of the box.

Note for Chuwi Hi10 owners: if in your BIOS settings you see Microcode Patch 35e (see attachment image_1.jpg) you will not be able to boot Linux with the i915 drivers activated.

From what I understand this happens because our BIOS version doesn’t allow linux to access the GPU and the DRM (thanks zak for the explanation, check attachment image_2.jpg).

I guess it is very difficult to proceed until Chuwi releases a firmware/BIOS update…

I was finally able to install Linux Mint 17.3 on the external USB key and I followed Lupo’s instruction to update the i915 driver and I added all the lines he suggested. It didn’t work.

I believe Zak is right and there’s something wrong with our version’s BIOS…

I will. I tried to install Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa using only one partition for / on the USB key, boot loader installation on MMC, no luck. I get the same error as before, the boot loader could’t be installed on /target/

I’m trying now with Linux Mint 17.2…

Hi Lupo, I’m trying to replicate your configuration right now.

I am installing Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa on a Sandisk USB 3 stick.

I prepared the USB drive with 3 primary partitions:

    500 MB ext2 for /boot

    ≈57 GB ext4 for /

    2 GB for Swap

I set up the boot loader installation on the /boot partition (see image attached) and around 80% of the installation process I get an error saying that it wasn’t possible to install the boot loader on /target/.

Can you please help me getting Mint installed?

Hello Zak, thank you for your interest!

I have a single boot Chuwi Hi10. If I boot from a Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 USB stick using “nomodeset” option I see Gallium 0.4 in System Details (picture attached).

So I have a different setup from Tikilou, he can boot Ubuntu correctly because he has an updated Chuwi Hi10…

I’m trying to install Linux Mint following Lupo’s hints: I guess I have to install Mint on a USB key with “nomodeset” option, then I need to update xserver-xorg-video-intel as Lupo explained.

    I’ll keep you updated!

    Hi Lupo and Tikilou,

I have a Chuwi Hi 10, same BIOS version as Tikilou’s (I checked it from the video you posted), but I can’t boot a Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 USB key (neither live or installation). I can boot a live USB session or installation session with “nomodeset” option but I can’t rotate the screen and the system is very slow, almost not usable.

I tried to prepare the USB key with Rufus and Lili, same negative result.

I will now try to install Linux Mint 17.3 to try the same configuration as Lupo’s one.

I honestly can’t explain why Tikilou’s system is booting Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 LTS on a USB key prepared with Lili and my one is not. I think we have the same hardware, I’m also using a very similar USB SanDisk USB 3 key. I tried four different USB sticks, same negative result.

Can you please give me some hint about how to proceed?
