Have you seen this CNX-Software article?

Yes I did, it’s what prompted me to make the post because in my experience everything works fine on Ubuntu 16.04 (which is the currently recommended version) and I had no problem installing to the SSD. (I did the bios upgrade Carlos mentioned first though.) I have been using it daily since March now.

I haven’t tried HDMI-out though since I don’t have the right cable for that.

I have no idea why Chuwi doesn’t advertise the fact it has an M.2, maybe because, at the last minute, they decided they needed that metal counter-weight to go the full length or some other design choice. Either way it’s great we have it. If you were to cut the bar the 2260 should fit in fine then. My 2242 is just placed in there and not taped down, I’ve traveled down to New Zealand and no issues.

The metal bar is not a counter weight though, I thought so too at first but I removed it several weeks ago out of curiosity and it’s really not needed, as far as I can tell. The keyboard-section is heavier than the screen, easy for anyone to test, so not a counter weight. Maybe it adds a bit of stiffness though but from an engineering point of view it seems like a very poor solution for that and I can’t notice much difference with regard to stiffness. Only reason I can think of for adding the bar would be to make the notebook feel more expensive, that is fairly common practice for budget products after all. So I believe it’s okay to remove it. It’s about 11% of the total weight so no big deal but still noticeable. But I’ve only tried a 2242 ssd in it anyway (which works great) so can’t comment on that.

Well, I got my m.2 ssd and installed Ubuntu 16.04 two days ago and everything seems ok, haven’t tested hdmi out, but the other stuff seems to work (kernel 4.8.0). Seem like a great low cost notebook for linux.

EDIT: tested camera and micro sd card as well, seems ok.

Thanks for the info! Have upgraded bios and tried booting Ubuntu 16.04.2 from a USB-key. Everything seems to work fine. 🙂

But I’m a bit unsure now since some say you need kernel 4.10, does anyone know why you would need the never kernel?

If you can’t even enter BIOS (i.e. press escape a couple of times directly after powering on) then the problem is very likely a hardware problem. So as Sx C says you could try to get it replaced from gearbest (and) or open it and see if something is obviously wrong inside, loose wires etc… maybe try unplugging and reinserting connectors if there is a poor connection somewhere.
