Its just one of the really cheap ones, http://g02.a.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1xPQnHFXXXXX.XVXXq6xXFXXXL/1pc-High-Quality-4-Port-Micro-USB-Power-Charging-OTG-Hub-Cable-Connector-Spliter-for-Android.jpg Appears to work perfectly. will do more testing. I also ordered a USB Vollmer and ammeter with an oled screen to keep track of the charging rate. Have you had the WiFi drives crash? its happened to me a couple of times where no network devices are available. A reboot always fixes it. but wow I love this tablet. Its soooooo nice to use. And that charging hub which arrived today has made it a whole heap more useful!!!

Oh those ones, but hang on they don’t offer charging and OTA at the same time do they? I’m sure someone will make one for the X98 Pro soon.

Strange, I haven’t had one crash in 2 weeks. Sure it gets hot, but that’s my only complaint with the tab. Wondering what’s up with the display crashes some are having??

Hi Guys…. My copper plate has been order…..All tougether I’m disapointed… My model x98pro -Horrible temps + throtting, quiet speaker, poor battery life, blue screen. I’m thinking to back to windows 8 …switch tablet mode on/off is painfull….no IExplorer on UI …microsoft edge during wideo play give me visable digitaizer line (red coulor specialy) in classic IE and chrome is fine …. I was expect better preformance compare to my Lenovo miix 2 8″ on windows 8 (z3470,2Gb RAM) and honestly i think my lenovo is faster ? I have couple question…

    1. Its possible to activate windows 8 using windows 10 key?
    2. Will be avilable android for this device? and any guide hot to install for dual boot?

I would like to say big THX for Chris and his great JOB…great website …carry on sorry for my poor english

Sounds like you have a defective tab. Even with the heat issues, this thing flies. No lag, great screen, quicker than my i3 laptop.

Next one I open up I will tackle it in a different way, if the bios update doesn’t fix it. But I’m sure that if the turbo boost clocks/limits or boost items are lowered it might fix the issue completely without the need for opening them up. It should also give us a nice battery boost. What I see on many of these tablets from Chinese is first batches can often have minor issues like this, normally they have various revisions to fix minor problems. Just look at how many revisions the X98 Air 3G has had, most are just eMMC changes and dual boot, or non-dual boot. But many were fixes to the cameras and screen inverted issues. There was also a batch with faulty intel GFX that would cause freezing. Nice of OKQI to post that, so at least Teclast are aware of the issue and a bios update is imbound. I will keep an eye on the Teclast forums for a download. @yamvmax I’m not sure the ram needs it, I used a better thermal pad there to at least help. Once we get the bios update all we need to do is find a way to charge and use the tablet at the same time. Unfortunately, my charging USB Hub that works on the X98 Air series and Chuwi tablets will not work here. It will stop charging after a few minutes no matter what I do. There must be a way to wire up a hub to charge and give data. If only we had a D/C power jack in.

I meant big ram heatsink on the cpu

4 watts? This processor will use up to 8 watts at full turbo. which is why we have issues. because it shouldn’t be able to turbo 24/7. not even the Microsoft surface turbos 24/7

I couldn’t find the Cherry Trail TDP, so I estimated it (wrong). :-( Anyway, we need some far better cooling and maybe BIOS changes re: turbo modes. Oh, Chris, maybe use some modeling clay to see what thickness the sink should be and keep the number of junctions to a minimum. I tried to open the case, like I have several times with my Air II using a guitar pick. Boy, is it tight. I don’t want to mess it up, as mine has really bad speakers, I may decide to return it.

If we could fit a ram heatsink on, I think heat issues would be gone.

My International X98 Pro (US English Windows 10 Home) from Aliexpress has terribly quiet and tinny sounding speakers, MUCH worse than my Air II. Can’t understand that as I think they are supposed to be the same speakers and appear to be so in Device Manager. And the overheating is RIDICULOUS. It instantly zooms to ~85 in a couple of cores when I start a 4K video. Idling it is in the 50s and 60s. My Air II idles in the 40s and hardly budges from that when playing 4K videos. Very disappointed in the X98 Pro. I could try to alter the heatsinks, but the speakers are still an issue and the heat even with feasible heatsinking seems crazy, like it needs a fan.

Not sure what you expected with the heat issue. It’s been stated numerous times that a heat sink mod is NEEDED.

Well the glass is the touch screen…so it probably is defective. Bummer.

@willba4 Yeah it’s not good. 4-5 hours, which is why I gave it 6/10 for battery life. If you want to get close to five hours use Edge. But I believe it needs a bios update. It turbo like crazy all the time 2.24 all cores. I expected a small drop in battery over the Bay Trail, but this is using power like a Core M! I also saw that Windows defender was eating up CPU and a few other Windows 10 things like system interrupts with high CPU use. This eats up the battery.

Probably also explains the hot temps with basic tasks. I do have to admit though, this tab is a speedy s.o.b. It’s quicker than my laptop with an i3 and 4gb ram.

@yamvmax Not sure it will fit, you have to be careful with it being to thick as it puts pressure on the screen and it’s noticeable as the IPS will touch the glass. If I do the mod again I will add copper to the ram and not the eMMC. Remove the shield and use a thickerpad on the Soc and 0.5mm thick on the top of it to connect with the rear housing. My X98 Pro (Int’l model) arrived today, Windows 10 Home and activated. Microphone issues fixed on this one (Sound good, skype works great) Temps are still the same so I only need to update my review and comment that the mic issue is solved. It got up to 85 degrees after benchmarking and gaming for 1 hour and a half.Only 1 degree less than my first model. The eMMC is the same model and speeds are the same +/- a few mbs. Edit: I just did a benchmark vs my modded unit and in the Resident Evil 5 benchmark, it improved the performance by 24%!! That’s pretty big. 19fps stock score Vs 24.1 copper heat sink modded. Video proof coming…

MAybe I will just do a single layer of the 40mm copper shim, That is twice the size of your 20mm. It should help cool that chip a little more.

Just bought 2 40 mm copper shims. Gonna put one on cpu, then 17m/kw tape, then the other 40mm shim, then more tape to make contact to shell. I’m guessing this will kill any throttling whatsoever.

that plate you are talking about is the EMI shield, which although isnt 100% nessesary it cuts out noise, so you might get issues with wifi and 3G reception, amd it could interfear with other devices that are nearby

I have run Tabs without it, and have had no issues. I would rather have proper cooling, and take a chance for a little interference, which fortunately, I haven’t had. Its probably required to pass regulations.

I’m liking the 1st idea, maybe a 3 inch by 3inch copper plate can be used instead of old aluminum plate. If you are worried about shorts, just put some thermal pads over components that are under it, before you attach it. I believe with this method, we should be able to keep the CPU way below 80c even with heavy long term gaming.

I think if we could have a larger copper shield and then have it 0.5mm thicker where the Atom Soc is to have contact with that. Then a thermal pad to connect with the rear housing we could move even more heat away from the SoC. My tablet with the 20mm x 20mm 1mm thin mod It did doesn’t throttle at all now. 80 degrees max when gaming and pushing the tablet hard. It’s very quick and snappy in Windows. Only gaming and that 12 EU GPU gets it up to 80 degrees otherwise it will never pass around 62 degrees and will hold 2.4 Ghz on all 4 cores. I now think this is partly a bios issue, the chipset is meant to have a short turbo duration and then clock down after it’s short burst. But for some reason mine will sit and hold at 2.24Ghz the whole time. Looking at the Z3736F it will never turbo on all cores at the max speed. Only single threads for a little while. Watching the clocks in CPU-Z I think a bios update to limit the boost time limit would fix both the heat and battery life without reducing the overall performance too much. Not even my Surface 3 would turbo at 2.4Ghz for as long as the X98 Pro.

How big is the shield roughly? I may do your mod, but add the copper shield intead of the aluminum, or eliminate shield altogether, and use ram heatsink which should help. If i can get this thing to stay under 80, i will be happy. I think you have a driver issue for the cores, I dont think mine stay turbo’d as long as yours.

Got another idea…How about a thicker shim? Maybe 2 or 3mm, but eliminate the stock heat shield? Thoughts?
