The reason that seller shows more than 10 avaliable and says he is out of stock is because they are selling products that ship from China to you. The seller never touches it.

@destry Question re. buying a Chuwi Hi12 If I get a defective piece of hardware – I pay shipping back to China via GearBest From the GearBest site “45 Days … Return shipping reimbursement is unavailable”. Even DOA. 1 year warranty repair you also pay shipping to China, then wait, but they do pay shipping back to the buyer. I’ve spotted a LA-based dealer who has a “Make an Offer” option on his ebay post 301989674923 Would it be worth offering him a little more for the same device to be able to be able to return within the USA (saving money & time) rather than to China? I’ve asked him how close he can get to the GearBest prices.

Here is where I purchased my second Hi12.

Wifi does work.. sort of, with the fix I posted last week. The wifi card is not recognized but the wifi does work. Once a proper driver is compiled with bluetooth included, then it will be great.

Cool! @destry So there’s plenty of browser flexibility. Two questions, please?

    1. Is it possible to lock-out/remove all Google apps? (Privacy/tracking concerns.)
    2. What are the outstanding need-to-do items for the Chuwi Hi12? (Sound, WiFi, Touch Screen, etc)

    Thanks!

Opera is another good browser for Linux.

On the Hi12, the stock Android only has the Google Play app installed. It does not have any other google apps including gmail.

Linux Mint Developers resist Google so Mint has no google affiliation. The Firefox browser in Mint will not let you use google for a default search either.

Linux Mint is designed to be 100% Google and Microsoft free.

The outstanding issues with Linux Mint on the Hi12 is Battery indicator, Sound, Wifi/Bluetooth, and Touchscreen. Outlook for fixes for these issues on the Hi12 looks promising.

I wouldn’t suggest any Joe to just go get one and install Linux Mint on it yet. Unless Joe wants to spend time and hard work getting the bugs worked out. I choose to accept the challenge and I had the fortune to purchase a second Hi12 unchanged to have a reference for hardware.

One other issue with the Chuwi Hi12 is the battery charger! Way too small at 3 amp! I purchased a 5 amp usb charger because with the stock charger plugged in at a full charge, I would kill the battery in less than 4 hours.

I am testing different versions on my tablet. My favorite flavor of mint is KDE and still looking at a couple weeks out before KDE 18 is released. I wanted to try the wifi patch on 17.3 and found out it worked quite well. I think I will leave the 17.3 on it for testing touch screen and sound for now.

Is that not also true for the other lightweight distro’s?… Linux Mint Mate (17.3 / 18) and Xfce 17.3

I am sure it would be the same with the other distro’s as well.

inxi -Fxz shows the sound card identified and shows the network as unidentified though wifi is working.

    Thanks Destry!

    That is very encouraging!

Thanks for the link to the USB WiFi device.

FYI: Many of the links along the right side bring up a 404 error.

I could not see details of the wired WiFi with the large antenna.

EDIT: You did inspire me to look around & though I didn’t find the wired EDUP I did find this interesting device:

    https://www.amazon.com/Netis-WF2561-Wireless-Supports-Antennas/dp/B00T2TXJFI

It, or something like it, would be good to have even when the internal Chuwi WiFi nic is working 100% – I often run into weak connections in hotels & elsewhere.

Here is my big unit: http://www.edupdriver.com/edup-ep-ms1552-300mbps-wireless-network-card-with-double-antenna-and-wi-fi-adapter-usb-lan-adapter/

I just installed Linux Mint KDE 17.3 64bit on my Hi12 and installed the wifi patch. Works really good! Fast and very responsive. Going to install the touch screen patch shortly after the updates finish.

My son & I are looking real hard at the Chuwi 12″ multi-OS tablet.

Do I correctly discern from this thread & those linked that the internal WiFi is not working in Linux, yet?

Would an external USB WiFi (with a Linux-friendly chipset) be a good temporary kludge?

I prefer Puppy Linux but Linux Mint or another Linux would be fine – booted from USB makes sense.

I can save portable data to a micro-SD.

Thanks for all you all share here!

    David~
I suggest you read through this thread before you decide to alter that Hi12 you want to get. https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=223426
I rushed testing Mint on my Hi12 and now wish I would have spent more time researching the point of replacing the Win10 installation instead of wiping the whole solid state drive. I do like Android and having that option to use it. I purchased a second Hi12 to keep it stock for now until all bugs are worked out of using Linux on it.
I posted the procedure to get wifi working on Chuwi tablets with LM in this post http://techtablets.com/forum/topic/linux-on-atom-based-devices/page/11/#post-42603
Doesn’t work perfectly, but it does work. I am sure the drivers will be perfected soon.

Wifi does work but not out-of-the-box… not from a fresh install. You have to patch some things as @destry showed in his posts above – see here.

Ask @destry maybe he can recommend a USB wifi NIC.

    Linux Friendly Wifi Adapter
I Have this wifi usb adapter and a big EDUP dual antenna stand alone usb cord unit. and both are plug and play with Linux. No drivers to mess with. Everything from EDUP is Linux friendly plug and play.

Also purchased this unit for the sound as it looks like the drivers for the sound may be a little ways out. It is plug and play also.

@destry over on the Linux Mint forum says he’s got his Chuwi Hi12 booting on USB with WiFi working.
I think he’s booting with the latest distro; Linux Mint Cinnamon 18 (which has the 4.4 Kernel). Have a look…
    https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=223722&p=1184439#p1184439

[Edit] Also, be sure to check his TT Linux on Chuwi Hi10 thread here, and his other thread on the LM forum.

That is correct! I am using the latest distro LM 18 with the 4.4 kernel. However to get the wifi working, I had to do a little work on it that I found right here in this forum thread.. I don’t remember the location of the posts that helped, but here is what I did.

    sudo apt-get -y install git

    cd
    git clone https://github.com/hadess/rtl8723bs.git
    cd rtl8723bs
    make
    sudo make install
    sudo reboot

Booted into Bios/ South Bridge/ LPSS & SCC CONFIGURATION/ SCC SDIO Support = changed acpi to PCI then saved and exit. After reboot, wifi working! Connected and online!

inxi -Fxz still shows card not found even though the wifi is working…

I changed the screen resolution to 1600 x 1024 as the 2160 x 1440 makes everything too small to read on the 12 inch screen.

Today I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon 18 full release on the HI12 Dual Boot with no installation issues. Did a complete disk wipe and install. Got wifi working. Still working on sound and touch screen. Resolution: 2160×1440 @ 59.95hz

What was strange was 2 weeks ago when I used live usb of Cinnamon 18 beta, touch screen worked. That was before I wiped the drive though..
