@destry Question re. buying a Chuwi Hi12

If I get a defective piece of hardware – I pay shipping back to China via GearBest

From the GearBest site “45 Days … Return shipping reimbursement is unavailable”. Even DOA. 1 year warranty repair you also pay shipping to China, then wait, but they do pay shipping back to the buyer.

I’ve spotted a LA-based dealer who has a “Make an Offer” option on his ebay post 301989674923

Would it be worth offering him a little more for the same device to be able to be able to return within the USA (saving money & time) rather than to China?

I’ve asked him how close he can get to the GearBest prices.

Here is where I purchased my second Hi12.

Ouch!

14 days money back, buyer pays return shipping, 15% restocking fee may apply

I’m hoping the other USA seller (in LA) will give me a break on the price (his price is also $319. but he allowed for Make an Offer, that he’ll come close to the Chuwi $296. package deal including keyboard, active stylus, & cover, and no restocking fee – if the device arrives defective/DOA (and preferably more than 14 days to test – since GearBest is 45 days).

His posted policy is worse than the one you used

14 days money back, buyer pays return shipping, 20% restocking fee may apply

We’ll see what he says …

I just sent the LA seller a second note – I am not pleased. I may as well deal with BangGood in China as the USA dealer terms are obscene.

This is what I sent (I’m guessing he won’t want to do business with me after reading this!):

If the device arrives DOA or is otherwise defective, how can you charge a 20% restocking fee for something shipped that isn’t what you agreed to ship when you accepted payment?
Isn’t that a “breach of contract”?
I need to know that I will receive what I pay for & if not 100% of my purchase price will be reimbursed.
I also should not have to pay return shipping for an item that’s not what I paid for (shipping isn’t “free”, it’s built into the price of the item).
Why am I expected to pay someone else’s cost of doing business?
I’m to give you 1/5 of the cost of a defective item, plus pay to return it to you?
Can you explain this, please?

The Seller replied that there are zero fees or return shipping costs for defective items, but that the Chuwi Hi12 is out of stock.

Interesting since his ebay page said “More than 10 available 1 sold”

Whatever – I now know to get verification of no fees or return shipping costs on defective merchandise prior to purchase.

The reason that seller shows more than 10 avaliable and says he is out of stock is because they are selling products that ship from China to you. The seller never touches it.

Personally, I would buy from one of the bigger retailers like GeekBuying, Gearbest, etc. for a couple reasons. 1) they have more volume and a reputation to uphold – so in theory should treat their customers better, on average, if you have a problem and need support, exchange/repair, etc., lest they get bad reviews hurting their sales. They are also more likely to be around longer than some small fry on Ebay. And 2) you can support TechTablets/Chris by using one of his affiliate links to purchase your tablet which gives him a small commission at no cost to you. The affiliate links to (GearBest, BangGood, Aliexpress, Geekbuying, Everbuying) are on this page: http://techtablets.com/support-us/ Note also that some of them have stock warehouses in closer places (eg. Spain) so may be faster shipping to you. For example Geekbuying has the Hi12 in stock in their Spain warehouse for US$279.

Gearbest has the Hi12 right now for US$240. Again, use the affiliate link! [edit]: oops, sorry I didn’t see that you wanted it with keyboard and other stuff.

Something is broken in their system – when I use the TT-affiliate link & select the package of 4 items only 2 items are listed in the cart for the 4-item package price.

I sent them a pricing error report … one more delay …

EDIT: Fixed & more discounted accessories may be added incl. 16GB USB stick for $2.89, 32GB Class 10 microSD for $7.99, etc.

Ordering now …

gearbest.com is a mess – chronic tech problems with the interface.

I went to Register prior to submitting my order & it would not send me the email confirmation – despite several tries.

It must be a chronic problem as a countdown script pops up saying to wait 60 seconds between requesting resends.

I waited 15 minutes for Chat support & was told his manager would have to manually submit it & that it would take 2 hours.

I asked why a simple Submit would take 2 hours and he replied that it’s night there.

OK … wow.

EDIT1: Order placed … finally …

EDIT2: Premature … received message late last night that the Paypal handshake failed so I was required to email pic of driver’s lic & utility bill – showing the same address as CC billing to confirm I’m real or something. Not trusting that that automated process actually worked – because it only accepted one of the 2 pics & I had to reissue with the second pic – I waited 10 minutes as 1/1 in the Chat queue to inquire. They said my order “should” ship in 2-5 business days … if they don’t find another way to mess-up the ordering process. I paid extra for extradited shipping so I might get my tech within 2 weeks. (I wonder if the hired the same co. that wrote the failed Obamacare Web interface?) Sigh …

Heads-up from the GearBest Team re. the Chuwi Hi12 keyboard.

(I had suggested they clarify “original” as many are misunderstanding that to refer to the oldest (plastic) keyboard.)

They wrote:

The item 173348302 is plastic.

The item 173348301 is metal.

Sorry, there isn’t the port for the keyboard to be powered separately from the tablet.

I don’t know if they’ll update their Web site, though they should since they’re wasting time answering the same question, each time with an unclear answer.

@David, this stuff is not Linux related. Maybe open a new thread in the General or “retail/reseller feedback” forum: http://techtablets.com/forum/forums/general/online-retailers-seller-recommendations-and-reviews/ Good luck! (edit) I kinda went off topic too posting about prices.

Hi!

I’m a long time Linux user, but new to this forum. I recently purchased a Onda oBook 12 and tried to install Ubuntu on it. I’ve tried 15.10, 16.04 and the XJUbunTAB 16.04; all of them boot correctly, but none of them make work some devices: wifi, sound, and bluetooth. XJUbuntu makes touch screen work, but calibration fails and it behaves in a weird way. I don’t worry about touch screen and I can live without touch screen in my laptop for some more years, but I badly need all others.

Booting in Windows I’ve been able to gather some information about those devices and all them seem to be SDIO bus devices. In Linux none of them show up in lspci, lsusb or lshw; /sys/bus/sdio/devices/ is an empty directory. I’ve tried a custom kernel 4.6.4 with all SDIO-like options activated with no success.

Any suggestions or recommended readings?

After twenty some years using linux, switching to Windows10 is not an option :-(.

Thanks in advance.

paste output of terminal command:

inxi -Fxz

lspci | grep Network

lshw -C network

and

sudo rfkill list

[edit] On second thought, download the Linux Mint Mate 18 64bit ISO and create a live USB boot of , boot and try it, then open a discussion thread on the LM wireless forum section and paste your results. Myself and others can followup there.

I’ve released another “sta” version with fixes to the hardware acceleration in Firefox/Chrome. I’ve documented it in the post https://xjesus.net/xjubuntu/2016/07/10/xjubuntab-16-07-09-touchscreen-ready-with-gestures/ The “oibaf” version doesn’t boot in my X98+ but might work in some other tablets. Once installed the “sta” version, I can add the “oibaf” PPA and get some improvements in graphics but nothing really important.

@xjesus
, I have not been following close your distro. Are their people running it well on Chuwi tablets?
