Something else for you guys to try if you want on your Atom or Core-M tablets.  Remix OS 3.0 (for PC) was just released.  It’s based on Android 6 Marshmellow which sits on the 4.4 Linux Kernel, the same as Ubuntu 16.04.  I was able to live-boot it on a USB I burned the ISO on using Unetbootin.  That was the first time it booted for me on my Lenovo AMD notebook. You can open a terminal/shell window and many of the usual Linux commands are there.  My Realtek rtl8732be wifi NIC worked fine and I was able to browse the internet.  I didn’t try installing any Google Play Store apps yet. I’ll report when I get around to trying to install it along side my Win10 and LinuxMint 18 dual-boot config.

@Bbaker , I’m lost with so many different tablets models 🙂 and some of them have worked with some releases of XJubunTAB, but others can’t make the touchscreen work.
I hope any Chuwi user tell me what do I need to install on XJubunTAB to make it work. I can only test my Teclast X98+

Yeah, not surprising, as @dax89 has shown that even different Chuwi tablets use different touchscreen devices/drivers.  I wish reviewers would start reporting what are the Wifi and Touchscreen devices in the various tablets reviewed so people can know what is known to work on Linux.  But prob it’s too much effort since only small % of Youtube viewers are Linux users 😉   Btw, I’m curious, does Remix 3 work on your Teclast X98 Plus?

OK, am back … received my very nice Chuwi Hi12

Burned Linux Mint to a USB stick via UNetbootin

When I put the USB stick in the tablet & reboot it does not see it.

I have tried setting it to boot to Android & to MS windows.

I can see the USB stick in the MS version of windows.

What, please, do I need to do to boot from the USB stick, please?

I’m used to a PC bios.

    EDIT:

Please disregard, I found the answer here:

    http://nokiaviews.com/download-chuwi-hi12-drivers-chuwi-hi12-recovery-image-chuwi-hi12-specs.html

My Chuwi keyboard shipped separately & has not yet arrived, so I’ll borrow one from another PC in the house & see how things go …

    Thanks!

[EDIT: ]  The directions are here http://techtablets.com/forum/topic/linux-mint-on-a-chuwi-hi10-tablet/#post-23521

What does it do? what do you see on the screen if anything?
Was this Mint 18 Cinnamon 16bit?  Make sure to md5sum verify your downloaded ISO prior to burning.
Did you format the USB stick FAT/FAT32 prior to installing with Unetbootin?
If it does not work, try using Rufus on Windows instead.  https://rufus.akeo.ie/
If that also does not work, my guess would be some BIOS setting probably related to UEFI and/or putting USB on top of the boot order.
Try looking on the XDA-developers forum for BIOS details.  Post back here your results.

I’m afraid this is a little less granular than I need.

Activate the Boot from USB option in the Chuwi firmware (BIOS): in order to get access to the setup switch on the tablet with Volume up pressed for few seconds.

What is the status of the Chuwi Hi12 tablet when one is to press the “Volume up” button, please?

Note: “Volume up” is the Left rather than the Right side of the switch.

I tried holding “Volume up” while powering on, while in Android, while in MS windows, & when powered off.

None of those brought me to a BIOS screen.

    Thanks – David

Try this page from @Destry who has Linux Mint 18 working on his Hi12: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=223426&p=1178079#p1178213

F-7 key gets into boot menu to boot from live usb.

Also, by clicking on @Destry ‘s name on the LM forum you can follow his other posts on how he got WiFi and other things working.  cheers, -Brad-
[EDIT] Quickref: his Wifi post is here: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=223722&p=1178498#p1183902

Thanks for the F-7 hint – holding it while powering on brought me into BIOS.

I’ll have to wait for my Chuwi keyboard to arrive – BIOS recognizes my Dell USB keyboard but it refuses to recognize +/- in order to alter the boot sequence.

EDIT1: I also tried a Logitech K120 & a K200, in both Default & US layout settings, same failure to recognize the +/- keys.

EDIT2: Just tried my son’s Logitech G15 keyboard, no joy.

I have been reading the progress being made by @destry with Linux Mint USB-boot on the Chuwi Hi12 on the linked site – would you prefer posts specific to that project (rather than something like this, which is about the tablet interface in general) all be posted there rather than here?

If it’s specific to Linux Mint then over there, especially since getting some things to work, like the touchsrcreen, will take a long time, if ever.  You can always post status here if you want to let people know how it works – eg., if they’re thinking of trying it on their Hi10/Hi12.

Re: +/- keys: did you try both the Shift<b></b>-= and Shift– method and the Num-Lock method of performing the + and – key clicks?

Btw, another resource for info is the Chuwi forums.  Their search function does not seem to work very well but you can use Google search like this:

how to enter bios setup site:forum.chuwi.com

This guy is having same problem as you entering BIOS http://forum.chuwi.com/thread-94-1-1.html

    Edit: this page http://forum.chuwi.com/thread-1210-1-1.html
    says

    Some other tidbits:
    1) Press ESC or DEL to enter the BIOS at the CHUWI splash screen
    2) Press F7 to get a boot device selection menu
    3) The left and right arrows, followed by enter can select windows or android instead of the volume rocker

    Cool, thanks!

I was just about to post this link http://forum.chuwi.com/thread-1160-1-1.html

It is all about backup, restore, latest BIOS, drivers, etc.

Emily, Super Moderator, appears really helpful.

were you able to enter BIOS setup with the “tidbits” from above?

I was in BIOS but changing the Boot Sequence, so that it boots from USB into Linux instead of ignoring the USB stick in favor of Android of MS Win10, remains impossible – because BIOS won’t recognize +/-

I didn’t see anything in the tidbits you shared that addressed that – but I appreciate having that info just the same.

Switching between Android & MS Win10 was already working fine.
