Doesn’t install properly.  Starts installing, then TWRP  reboots.  kernel says 3.14.3.

Machetekills, can we update SuperSU on this ROM, or do we block it like in your previous toolbox?

Here is the procedure explained with a bit of detail:

Download both the toolbox and the ROM from above.

Extract the toolbox, but leave the ROM as a zip file.

Copy the ROM to and external SD on your tablet if you are doing a complete wipe, or you could use the internal SD if you don’t mind leaving files left over from the previous stock ROM.

In the toolbox folder execute steps 1,2,3 and 5.  You can skip 1 and 2 if you have already installed Machete’s root from another post.

** If you get the boot screen enabling the selection of Android or Windows, DO NOT skip the countdown by clicking OK.  You will bypass the startup commands **

Boot into TWRP recovery.  There is a way to do this with buttons, but I’ve always found this difficult.  Easier to open cmd.exe and execute “adb reboot recovery” (without the quotes).  Depending on your PATH, you may need to switch to the extracted toolbox \BIN folder, or just run ADB_shell.bat.

In TWRP recovery, select wipe and wipe using the default options.  I also chose the advanced wipe and wiped the internal SD so no carry over files were kept from the previous installed apps.  You may choose to leave this.

In TWRP select install and the location where you stored the ROM zip. Swipe install and wait.

    Reboot and wait.

After about 5 minutes you will have a new version of Android on your tablet.

    Profit!

What is the data size in this ROM?

Can apps be written to the SD Card?

You say that if we have previously used toolbox we only need to flash the boot.img from the archive.  Does this mean if we have previously used your root toolbox?

    Downloading now!

    Thanks

I’m really looking forward to this. Great work so far. Was just about to remove windows to give the Android side a bit more room.

I’ll watch this post to see how you go.

    Regards

Just be aware that applying this update will wipe your device back to factory.  You’ll lose all apps and settings, but if you’ve linked your google account and allowed google to back up your device, apps will be re-installed.

There is a problem in all the batch files (the different steps) which doesn’t update the PATH to include the bin directory so the individual command lines won’t execute so the whole batch file fails. You can manually update the PATH to include the BIN directory, or open the batch files up and run each line from within the bin directory.

This does work on both windows 10 and Linux though you will need top update top the latest version of adb tools on Linux.

Has anyone tried this yet?  I’d like to give it a go, but don’t want to have to completely re-install windows.  Can anyone confirm a complete re-install is required?

First of all, big thanks to machetekills!

I have an X80 Power, not pro, which is supposed to have the same internals, but may be slightly different.

I managed to work my way through the instructions with a few issues, but can confirm root access.

I think that the batch files have issues with the PATH statement because they fastboot commands in each can’t find the boot.img and recovery.img files. I had to run them manually.

Translated menu options: For Developers = Developer options, factory unlocked = OEM unlocking

Now for the major issue!  On my X80 Power, the touchscreen is reversed along the x-axis!

I’m pretty sure it’s a problem with the boot.img file as it happens in twrp as well.  Has anyone got the original boot.img file from the X80 Power.  Anyone know how to fix it?

The one I ordered off Aliexpress was definitively marketed as dual boot, Windows 10 and Android 5.1.  Screen captures even showed android screens, but they were clearly 4.x so undoubtedly only simulated screens.

This was the original link, which is no longer up, but look at the url:

    http://id.aliexpress.com/item/Chuwi-Hi8-Pro-Dual-Boot-Android-5-1-windows-10-Tablet-PC-Intel-Cherry-Trail-Z8300/32468358205.html

Also the original text from this site:

Another AliExpress seller leak that was pulled, but later reappeared. The Chuwi Hi8 Pro is an updated Chuwi Hi8. Gone is the Bay Trail Z3736F, replaced by a Cherry Trail X5 Z8300 and 2GB of RAM. There is also a micro HDMI port and what looks to be a USB Type C plug shown in one image? Dual boot, Android 5.1 and Windows 10. Everything else is the same as the Hi8.

From memory, the images on Gearbest still show android screens, so there’s no doubt it was supposed to be dual boot, but somehow got sidelined.

My suggestion to anyone lookng for dual boot, I wouldn’t purchase yet.  It will probably come, but there’s no guarantee, and there’s no guarantee that the firmware will load on the original versions.

Did you order a dual boot or Windows only version?

If you look at the chuwi Hi8 Pro on Gearbest or Aliexpress You’ll find that it’s now a windows only tablet. Chances are the problem related to Android and not the hardware itself as the email says.

Until they get it sorted out i would cancel your order and wait to see when and if they get the bugs sorted. I did.

I wouldn’t blame the sellers, it’s clearly further up the chain.
