I think I’ve had enough with this tablet, Onda just aren’t improving. Their last tablets I’ve reviewed have been average at best. Bluetooth also doesn’t work, I cannot connect a single device to the tablet. It just says searching forever.

So to sum up my experiance far:

    Cons:

    • Random lag and freezing issues (Hardware?)
    • Sim card reader is broken
    • BT is broken
    • Wifi has limited connection issues at times and poor reception.
    • Windows 10 came in Chinese only
    • Mic is broken
    • I can’t connect the tablet in Android to my PC (never detected it)
    • First attempt to flash the dual boot bios = brick..
    • Poor sound
    • 4 hours battery life or less
    • No USB 3

    Pros:

    • Nice screen
    • 4:3 factor
    • Core M Power

Yes, I give up on this one I think. Just a massive time waster with all the hours spent messing around with it.

@mrdasher Yes thats the mic and I replaced it in it’s spot. The entrance for the sound is on the front a small gap below the glass, right bottom. What a waste of $389 🙁

There have been requests for installing (Update) Windows 10 on the Chuwi Vi8. Here is how I did it.

Note: I have the Chuwi Vi8 dual boot that came with Android and Windows 8.1

    1. Download the ISO for Windows 10 from Microsoft. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO
    2. Download Rufus from here  https://rufus.akeo.ie/
    3. You will also need: a) 32Gig USB drive. b) OTG adapter with power. Something like this is suitable:http://miniimg.rightinthebox.com/images/384×384/201407/vkbvti1405692421115.jpg
    4. Keyboard and mouse which can be plugged into the OTG. Try and get a OTG with 4+1 ports or use a WIFI mouse+keyboard.
    5. Download the Latest Chuwi drivers from here(Thanks to user ibrahim on this forum):http://www.mediafire.com/download/jejnn0bnoonv0aw/Vi8_Win10_10240_X86_Drivers_Update_Sorted_By_Junnie_V150806.rar
    6. Use Rufus to make the USB drive bootable using the Windows 10 ISO (1)
    7. On the USB drive make a folder and extract the drivers (5) into it.
    8. Download this file (This is the switcher used to switch OS) and copy it into the drivers folder you created in (6) http://www85.zippyshare.com/v/9Ha3I389/file.html
    9. Plug in your OTG and make sure the power is plugged in and working. There will be a switch on the OTG for this.
    10. Plug in your USB drive and in Windows, open File Explorer, navigate to the USB drive and run setup.exe
    11. Windows 10 Upgrade will start. Follow the prompts on screen and choose to download upgrades.
    12. Important: After a while Win 10 will report that there is not enough space on the Chuwi to install the upgrade and you will be offered an alternative location to use. Choose your USB drive. https://www.thurrott.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/mo-space-needed.jpg
    13. Also see here https://www.thurrott.com/windows/windows-10/4547/upgrade-a-small-tablet-or-laptop-to-windows-10
    14. Windows will now continue and will finally reboot into Windows 10. The touch driver installed by Win 10 is wrong. So first thing you do, after logging in, is using your mouse, open explorer and navigate to the Drivers\Touch_PG folder on your USB, right click on SileadTouch.inf and select Install. Now your touch will work properly.
    15. Install all the other drivers one by one a) if there is a EXE file, run that or else look for the .INF file, right click and select install.
    16. Finally install the file downloaded (8) and create a shortcut to it on your desktop for easy access.
    17. You have now successfully updated to Windows 10 on your Chuwi.

You might be able to use something like this USB to HDMI adpater in windows:
    http://www.4cabling.com<wbr />.au/usb-to-hdmi-converter.ht<wbr />ml?gclid=CMv0gr_j4cYCFQxwvAodsMoE3g
But at $99 it costs more than the tablet!

I have bought the Easycast OTA and it works with the Hi8. its better than a Chromecast as you can do a direct wifi connection (useful for when travelling) and supports both Mirroring & Streaming. Because it can also connect to your home wifi network you can access it from any wired or wireless devices on your network to stream content. Mirroring the screen I found is not very useful as there  is a lot of lag/delay – this is not an issue just with the Easycast OTA my smart TV supports mirroring and I have the same issues with lag. Using the DLNA streaming/casting feature works much better. I found streaming seems to work better in android using the Localcast app – eg for streaming mkv videos.

Tried Fedora 22 Live, no wifi, no BT, no touch screen,  no pen. SSD, CPU, GPU, Audio, USB and HDMI, battery, dim etc worked, so basically one can install Linux on this and then continue to battle with Realtek.

Can anyone confirm the latest (stable) drivers for wifi module for Win 10 ? Currently driver installed: 1027.4.0630.2015,  should be 1030.0.0515.2015 ?

This seems to have a VERY weak wifi card, it I s pretty much doing what my venue 8 pro would do, before I updated from their website. Basicaly, what happens is, if I  use miracast, the module will cause the internet connection to be lost “limited”, after disconnection from wireless display, it will (sometimes) reset the connection, combine that with using a Bluetooth mouse, and everything kinda goes south. I hope I don’t need to use a wifi dongle with the keyboard, as it defeats the purpose of the internal module (My cheap android phone does a better job of this) , I also notice that wireless connection/Bluetooth/and micro SD card can and will all disconnect while attaching keyboard. Are there any drivers for composite usb device (keyboard) that may be required?

(On a side note, can the module be upgraded/replaced? Or will the tinfoil hat hack help? This seems to be a major drawback to this device. I haven’t opened up yet to upgrade the ssd yet, and haven’t seen were module is located.

I didnt try the single lang key, I’m afraid I used a generic key and used the naughty kms thingy :/

It’s back in the game now I used the onda supplied drivers and everything is working, can only get 40mbps down on wifi though which is rubbish.

This thing flys, just got a 1908/4044 geekbench mark which is great when you consider its compact form factor. Charger is pants, think I’ll search the web for a more compact 12v 3a brick.. think I would of preferred usb charging even it is very slow.

There is a cube i7 core m review on the xda forums that says it has dual band wifi Chris are you able to confirm or deny this? Have you tried to use something like this on a tablet?

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833315148

This would allow for a cheap Chinese tablet and the ability I need for 5ghz streaming. Though I am not sure what kind of requirement this thing would need other than the full size usb.

Thanks for all your good work. I have upgraded  to Win 10 but may have missed one of the drivers. My x98 Air 3G cannot find my HP Oficejet Pro 8600 on my network, but works fine with direct USB connection. Is there a radio driver I might have skipped? Wifi works fine.

Temporary solved it by putting a usb wireless adapter in the usb hub, everything works fine with it. Disabled the internal wifi of the tablet…i am seriusly thinking to open it and fix the antenna with the aluminium because even when i had win8.1 it had the same problem, so maybe its not a driver issue…what do you think?

    Hey Guys,
I thought i would write up a tutorial on how i did the installation of Windows 10 on my Chuwi Hi8 Tablet, Please note that i do not take responsibility if break/damage your tablet.
Please note I have upgraded Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 in order to Activate my product key thats aligned to my Microsoft Account, once the upgrade is complete and the product key has been activated it was then a clean installation was performed, I strongly suggest to upgrade first before performing the clean installation.

    I hope this helps 🙂

Chuwi Hi8 Win 8.1 Drivers Doubledriver (82.7 MiB) & Chuwi Hi8 Touch installer (71.3 KiB)
    http://techtablets.com/downloads-drivers-roms/

    ——————————————–
The Upgrade: (Upgrades the OS from 8.1 to 10 with an Activated licence):

Download Windows 10 Home 32-bit version (Supported for you Tablet) via the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool, this may take a while depending on your internet connection.

Whilst your waiting for this to download, have a look at how much space is left on your Tablet as you will be needing at least 6gb in order to install the upgrade, for me i didnt have anything important on the device so i decided to run the recovery and bring the device back to factory standard and making sure it was activated under my Microsoft Account once again without doing all the updates.

Soon as the ISO has been downloaded, Plug in your USB to your PC and run the Rufus app on your PC selecting the Drive that your USB stick is using then click on the small image on far right bottom of the page that looks like hard drive with a CD on top and wait about 10-30 mins for this to complete.

Once completed, fire up your tablet, plug in the OTG adapter and plug in your USB hub with your keyboard/mouse & USB connected.

Once in Windows, go to Windows Explorer and run the Windows installer and follow the prompts, you do not have to download the additional updates just yet as this will contribute to additional space to be taken from your tablet.

Keep clicking next and then let the Tablet take its course in the upgrade procedure, this may take a while to do…

Soon as you have logged into Windows 10, you will need to check your Product Key has been activated if it is your good to go.

    ——————————————–

Clean Installation: (Clean installation, Deleted Partitions Edition only if Windows 10 is activated):

Power off your device Connect the USB Installer, Wifi dongle, USB keyboard and mouse to your USB Hub/OTG Cable to the Device.

Power on your device and hold down the “ESC” Key when you see the CHUWI Logo, this will take you to another menu then select “”

Choose your Language / Region then click next, then the Product key screen may appear, if so then click skip.

For Clean installation click “Custom Installation”, this will enable you to select the partition and wipe it or otherwise do what i did and delete all the partitions and create a new one (this will give you a total of 29.8gb), the installation process will take about 30+ mins to install.

Once the install has been completed Windows, Log into Windows using your Windows Account, then run Windows Updates and reboot.

When you have rebooted, Run “Double Drivers” application from your USB and then select the folder “Chuwi Hi8 Win 8.1 Drivers Doubledriver” and then click on Restore, during this process Windows will display notifications asking you to install drivers that have not been signed by Microsoft for Windows 10, just keep clicking install and once complete, then reboot the Tablet and then run the windows update to check your drivers once again..

    And your done!

Yes, as a test I was able to run the Parted Magic ISO. However, I also needed a USB hub to plug a USB keyboard, USB Mouse and USB stick with the bootable ISO as there was no touch screen (and no WiFi) support by default for this particular ISO – maybe other Linux ISOs will have this or can be modded to have the right drivers. I was also hoping I could have the ISO on a bootable SD card but the Hi8 could not seem to see it as a bootable option.

    Hi,
Everybody who own c5j6 tablet. This write up is after a bitter experience i have gone thru
    please note this very carefully,
it is completely and purely from my bottom of my heart with solid experience with c5j6 model

    first things first.

1, do not update any updates either from windows or android. In android there is a stupid chinese application teclast update. Please uncheck it.
    2. Do install belarc software in windows, link is here,http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
run this and save the information of your decice to cloud google drive, particularly product key. Note it down and if possible go to windows site and download original wwindows 8.1 with bing with this product key.
    3. Make a bootable GPT partition disk using rufus or iso2disk software.
    https://rufus.akeo.ie
    http://www.top-password.com/iso2disc.html
    these 2 links are genuine
    4. Run dxdiag and note down the status of whql signatures if any by taking images or printscreen, also run commd prompt to know about product key and cross check it with belarc value.
    5. Buy this accessory
    http://m.shopclues.com/micro-usb-host-otg-cable-with-external-micro-usb-power-for-nexus-4-5-6-7-9-10.html?utm_campaign=Search-PLA-Shopping&utm_medium=CPC&utm_source=Google&gclid=CjwKEAjwlPOsBRCWq5_e973PzTgSJACMiEp2vkiC8CIHTqK9Seyq45d8wBpNsJ3h05ZmGvZq8alEbhoC5zvw_wcB
this will be very helpful to run your tablet whiel charging and simultaneously working thru keyboard, mouse and pendrive.
this will be useful for any restoration if required due to fail to boot after updates ( you can view my posts regarding)

Through command promt. With help this otg hub, first access bios through keyboard, take images of bios pages. There are 3 such pages where in first page you will find bios compliance and also teclast tpad project. These chinese OEMs buy bulk volume keys from microsoft and it costs for them @5 to 10 $ and they install windows with one single key in thousands devices. Therefore if you notice the id (which will be c5j6 for your tablet) at back side with some serial no. They take advantage of not providing any windows original backup dvd by disabling boot files in system 100mb partition through updates and ask you to pay them extra dollars for original dvd/pendrive. This cheap business trick is adopted by not only teclast but dell, lenovo and many such brand companies. Microsoft head bill is also not exception to this trick moreover he may be the inventor of such a sucking idea.
6 If you are having a retail version and sure of how to install win 8.1 (mind you this tablet is a uefi system based one, hence it requires gpt partitioned bootable pendrive) and wish to remove chinese stuff, i suggest you to master dual boot systems and copy entire partitions (there are 19 partiotions which i have attached a image of it in my post) to a back up pendrive of 128 gb capacity. I also suggest to copy them in a laptop or desktop and go through all directories mainly intel. It will help you to restore any point of time.
    7. Always take an image iso of a latest restore point, this will be very helpful in future device failure ti boot. Store these restore imgs in evexternal system.
These are very important dos one should do particularly with these OEM chines tablets. These chinese guys are very cunning, they try to get all imp details of many valued customers through their chinese os, firmwares. Particularly if you observe the drives for blutbluetooth and wifi, their drives names are in chinese language. They control the devices through these drives specially designed for their requirements.
All these 7 points are within our hands, but if problems due to over heating or battery failure or adapter failure no one can do any thing because, there is no any service personnel or department to take care from original teclast web site. It is really disgusting,
I FINALLY SUGGEST NEW CUSTOMERS TO BE AWARE OF THESE THINGS PARTICULARY AFTER SALES SERVICE WHICH IS VERY IMPORTANT BEFORE THEY BUY.
SORRY FOR SUCH POST BUT I AM HELPLESS.
FORGIVE ME FOR ANY HARD FEELINGS
