Cool! @destry So there’s plenty of browser flexibility. Two questions, please?

    1. Is it possible to lock-out/remove all Google apps? (Privacy/tracking concerns.)
    2. What are the outstanding need-to-do items for the Chuwi Hi12? (Sound, WiFi, Touch Screen, etc)

    Thanks!

Opera is another good browser for Linux. On the Hi12, the stock Android only has the Google Play app installed. It does not have any other google apps including gmail. Linux Mint Developers resist Google so Mint has no google affiliation. The Firefox browser in Mint will not let you use google for a default search either. Linux Mint is designed to be 100% Google and Microsoft free. The outstanding issues with Linux Mint on the Hi12 is Battery indicator, Sound, Wifi/Bluetooth, and Touchscreen. Outlook for fixes for these issues on the Hi12 looks promising. I wouldn’t suggest any Joe to just go get one and install Linux Mint on it yet. Unless Joe wants to spend time and hard work getting the bugs worked out. I choose to accept the challenge and I had the fortune to purchase a second Hi12 unchanged to have a reference for hardware. One other issue with the Chuwi Hi12 is the battery charger! Way too small at 3 amp! I purchased a 5 amp usb charger because with the stock charger plugged in at a full charge, I would kill the battery in less than 4 hours.

Vivaldi was created by the prior creator of Opera, and IMO it’s a better product even now, and yet is new and still improving.
Both Vivaldi and Slimjet being independent of Google (despite using the Google Chromium browser engine) have many more privacy features.  They both default searches to others (Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo) but they don’t restrict you – you can still set Google as the default search engine if you want to.

I think i solved the problem after reading some articles on the internet. A lot of people are complaining about the same interference issue on some well known brands of laptops and some have found that USB 3.0 norm is the fault of poor wifi connections, as it makes some signal noise around 2.4ghz band interfering with wifi signals. After reading this i went to the kitchen, grabed a small piece of tinfoil and wrapped it around of my western digital 3.0 hard drive cable… Without the tinfoil my cube could only see 2 or 3 wireless networks available but after wrapping the cable i could see all the networks around my apartment (more than 12) and was able to connect to my home router. So the problem is not on the tablet but on the connecting cables of existing/older 3.0 hard drives that might have some NON SHIELDED cables. Try to replace them and see if it solves the problem of poor wifi signal. Regarding speeds i think 45Mbs is the maximum this wifi card is able to connect… Any solution on how to improve this would be great ?

    Do you mean 45MB/s or 45Mbit/s ?

Wifi does work.. sort of, with the fix I posted last week. The wifi card is not recognized but the wifi does work. Once a proper driver is compiled with bluetooth included, then it will be great.

I just remembered that a couple of pages back you said WiFi & Sound work fine right away with an edup USB nic & an outboard USB sound card.

    Way cool …

Oh, cool then … if WiFi works & apps that work on Mint, Android, or a MS version of windows will run (w/o sound temporarily) I guess I’ll order the tablet.

BTW: Have you heard when the new aluminum keyboard/cover will be available?

Without touch screen it’s a desktop via a USB keyboard. (No interest in the original keyboard – based on poor reviews.)

Just wanted to make sure I understood the differences between the two. It seems if you don’t need HDMI then the Book is the better option. Any thoughts?

From the specs it looks like a ~20% price difference is probably worth getting the Book.

    both have

    • Wacom EMR stylus support
    • 10 point capacitive touch (FT5826)
    • microSD (TF) card slot
    • 3.5 mm headphone
    • 4GB RAM
    • 64GB m.2 SSD (upgradeable on both models)
    • 10.6 inch 1920×1080 IPS screen
    • Bluetooth 4.0
    • Micro USB 3.0
    • Cameras: 5MP/2MP

    i7 Stylus (~$290)
    ——————————————————————————
    CPU: M-5Y10c
    Graphics: 5300
    WiFi: Realtek N RTL8723B
    Video out: mini HDMI
    Battery: 4500mAh
    Keyboard: optional fixed position

    i7 Book (~$320)
    ——————————————————————————
    CPU: m3-6Y30 (~10% faster according to http://cpubenchmark.net)
    Graphics: 515 (~30-40% faster according to http://www.notebookcheck.net)
    WiFi: Intel AC 3165
    USB: USB C (charging support)
Video out: HDMI through USB C
    Battery: 4300mAh (~5% smaller)
    Keyboard: optional transformer style

Don’t buy the USB-c version (rev2). I have it and it’s scam, compare to the rev1 version:

    • no USB 3.0 (the usb-c port is usb 2.0 wired). Already asked at gearbest and they confirmed it: http://i.imgur.com/c3IzkEV.png (what a joke)
    • slow charge, it just charges “fast” if it’s powered off then it takes about 5hours to charge from 0 to 100%
    • usb-c port cant give enough power to power it while it’s on, it alway goes back to 98% then charges to 100%, stays a bit, and charges again, in a loop. This just happens if you use the device a “bit” for example watching a movie or watch twitch.tv at source. or just test it with prime95
    • DDR3 instead of DDR3L, this is bad because it drains way more power, but also means more heat, and unstable at higher speeds. thatfor it’s set to 1066MHz.
    • DDR3 is clocked at 1066MHz instead of 1600MHz, which is a huge speed loss. Tried to set it to 1600MHz resulting in random reboots and app force closes (both Windows and Android).
    • cheap and slow Toshiba/Hynix eMMC, 30-50% slower than the Samsung MMC in rev1. The Toshiba has around 30MB/s write speed, where Samsung one has 77MB/s
    • So far had lots of bluescreens, mostly related to the Realtek Wifi driver, also had some freezes yet in Windows while sticking in a USB pen

That’s wierd, I’ve had to plug my usb 3.0 flash drive, because I had to reinstall, without any hitches in wifi speed.

Hello, since I bought mu Chuwi also for reading mags I think I can give a good answer.

I am an avid digital reader, for books I prefer my kindle and only occasionally my Note 3 oe iPad mini…but for magazines, newspapers and comics…I really needed something more, I was really fed up with the pinching out and the zooming…and I don’t like that “tablet-friendly” page formats newspapers offer…I want to see the real page in all its glory!

Well, fact is…I bought my Chuwi only for that purpose. I was not dreaming of downloading a lot of other programs, I only wanted KioskoyMas, Zinio and that’s all. I was also ready for the inconvenient of having to erase my downloaded newspaper everyday, and my magazines periodically, since my 16GB iPad mini was constantly annoying me with that “I am full” pop-up, being those apps the main culprits. I just wanted that. I was ever ready for a slow web browser.

But…to my amazement, my Chuwi has let me make much more than that. I can read those magazines and newspaper perfectly, almost always with no zooming, comics are a pleasure to read. But, more than that…I am able to have more issues downloaded at a certain time (it is because, misteriously, the same app takes much more place in the iPad than in Chuwi), although of course I avoid hoarding.  Apart from that, I’ve downloaded a bunch of other apps, including those for watching films and Tv, since the quality is very good. Yes, it’s not the iPad retina, but who cares. The other advantages compensate. As to the browser, no problems by now, it is fast certainly. I love the fact that the tablet has real “big” USB ports with no need of adapters, or that it can take a sd card. In fact,  I am using that old wired keyboard again…much faster to connect it than to do it via bluetooth. I mainly use the Chuwi with Android, although I have used Windows and no problems.

Well…now for the flaws. They are not important to me, it wouldn’t deter me to buy the Chuwi again. But of course they must be mentioned.

    1. Bluetooth and Wifi conflict: I have only tried twice, but when I want to stream video and at the same time use a Bluetooth speaker, it works but the streaming sometimes stops. I don’t know the cause, maybe it is a coincidence.
    2. I tried to connect my Chuwi to my TV via HDMI and the TV didn’t detect it. I searched the web and read it is sometimes the television set’s fault…and since it is not important for me, I did not try again.
    3. Sound is good for me, but not very, very good. Not very loud I mean, I do not mean distortions.

And this is my opinion. Out of 10, I would give it a 7 in general considering the general people’s requirements. But for me, it is 9 out of 10.

I already tried using the usb 3.0 hard drive while charging the tablet, and the problem persists making me believe that must have to be some sort of intereference with the chip while working at 3.0 speeds… 🙁

Also my wifi card it’s only able to connect at 65Mbs on wifi N routers… All other equipment i have (laptop and cellphone) are able to connect at higher speeds like 130Mbs. Do you think it’s a driver issue or it’s a hardware limitation?

    Hello,

I received my Cube i9 yesterday, and hopefully it’s working fine. I’m going to put Linux on it besides Windows 10.

So far I’ve simply booted a USB Live Ubuntu 16.04, and it’s quite promising. Everything apart from wifi (didn’t test bluetooth yet) worked well, even the touchpad gestures.

Beware, I tried booting that same Ubuntu after flashing the optimized BIOS, and it didn’t work (only black screen). I guess some of the modifications introduced a regression in the detection of the bios capabilities, or something like that. Unfortunately I don’t have the kernel output, so it’s hard to tell what went wrong.

Next step will be partitionning, installing, and configuring the OS so that it can be used as a tablet. Gnome Shell and Unity are the two best options so far, I’d say. I hope the onscreen keyboard won’t be too basic.

So, a while ago a user posted a permanent installation of TWRP and a modified rom here. he soon removed it without explanation. but, thanks to the activity feed all is saved, including the unedited text. here it is in all it’s glory, (i haven’t had time to check it out but i will soon).

    Hi everybody!

Very sorry for my English, i hope someone can test and make new guide or support people if have requests…

This is my first modded rom for Chuwi Hi8, info:
    – Based on the original rom.
    – Rooted and SuperSU installed.
    – Language is English, have no google account, you have to add and change everything like new installation, except that the android was tweaked.
    – Installed Xposed and modules needed to add features that android is missing (as % battery on the status bar, add the contents of QuickSettings, add the Clear All button in Recent apps … and many other hidden features to save battery & tweak android). You can open Xposed_Installer manually and add other modules as needed.
    – Only app / modules related to the system is installed, for the popular app on the Play Store you can install them by yourself.
    – If you want to save more battery life: switch Airplane mode when working or gaming offline (does not require wifi), disable synchronization accounts and reopen once a day or when needed, turning off the screen with the sleep function rather than just off-screen > double-click on the status bar on the screen will turn off & switch to sleep mode, don’t worry because everything will be normal after reopen screen.
    – Want to enter TWRP recovery: use Reboot Recovery app.

    ======================

    Download Rom

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3yGGP51ibBfSEFJMXpGVm5vLXM/view?usp=sharing

    & TWRP 2.8.7.0

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3yGGP51ibBfN2wwOUw5VWt4WFU/view?usp=sharing

1/ To use this rom, you must flash TWRP for chuwi Hi8, see how to do that here: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=vi&ie=UTF-8&u=http://www.tablette-chinoise.net/forum/twrp-recovery-v2-8-7-0-t8147&edit-text=&act=url
Follow guide and be sure you can boot into TWRP recovery (use Recovery Reboot app).

@ If you can’t enter above link of the guide, don’t worry, just download “twrp_chuwi_hi8.7z” from Google Drive folder > extract to computer’s hard drive > connect Chuwi hi8 to PC (make sure Chuwi already set Usb debug is enabled and Windows detected the tablet while connecting) > navigate to “twrp_chuwi_hi8” folder and run recovery. bat (Run as Administrator) > waiting for Chuwi reboot, flashed and reboot again to twrp recovery. Very simple, you don’t need to enter any command or choice any option to flash TWRP recovery, the revovery.bat just do all. Backup current rom of your tablet if needed at first time enter twrp recovery, better is select “Enable compression” because z3736f is very fine to compress/uncompress, save alot of micro-sd card space.

2/ Unzip files TWRP_ (use Extract Here).rar by right-click and select Extract Here (of course must have WinRar installed to get “Extract Here” command). Copy folder “TWRP” to the Micro SD card (don’t copy into insternal store of tablet).

3/ Reboot to TWRP recovery, select Wipe > Advanced > Click on davik + system cache + data > drag the slider to start the wipe. Then return to the main menu of TWRP choose Restore > select the backup you just copied to a memory card (first letters is “2016-04-05–04-40-42….”) > scroll to Restore > Wait until finished, click Reboot > System, boot to android (please don’t wipe after Restored or android will lost all tweaked settings).

*** Note: before restoring this mod rom, please Backup your current android for can restore back to old stats if mod rom are bad with you (remember to select backup to External store). Once this mod rom uploaded to Google Drive, i was forgot to delete some information line on the lock screen, after restore the rom please change settings to your info.

    ===========

Have fun & good luck! ?

    details about it:

    1/ Rooted, SuperSU installed.

2/ Change theme to LG G4 with lollipop icon and some new effect from s7 lancher.

3/ Remove useless intel.hdmi service, it drain battery so much with no hdmi port on chuwi hi8.

4/ Xposed installed with some modules like: 3C Toolbox (all in one tweak tool), Gravity Box (KK) (all in one tweak tool), Adblock (prevent ads), Battery Stats Plus (whatch what app are drain battery, can remove it include system app/service), add battery remain to status bar, add menu on bottom bar, add more settings icon to QuickSettings menu (drop down at top-right of the screen), add more option to Power button (Screenshot, Screen Record, Power off, Air mode, Reboot, Reboot to Recovery…), add douple click to status bar to turn off screen and sleep (you can change wifi keep on while sleep in setting if need, add date/time to center of status bar, add Clear all button to Recent apps, add more option to exclude apps while sleep.

5/ Lucky Patcher installed, with path to android already, you can buy unlimited coins in some no-mod games, tested with Subway Surf and Talking Tom. You can use Lucky Pacher to force all apps and updates auto user SD Card, not internal store.

6/ In my new chuwi hi8, battery life time can reach 5h+ for screen opened (oc just facebook, chrome, tweaking system… no games), about 8-10% battery for 30 mins screen on with full apps/games installed (many serivices).

Just backup your current rom by twrp recovery and try this cook rom, if have bad felling just restore your rom ? I’ m still finding more way to increase the battery life by whatching some useless (or safe to remove) services in system.

I have received the device on friday evening and played with it most of the weekend.

There is 2 issues that I can see :

    • Shielding is not that good in my device. While plugged on AC, through the provided power adaptor or through  an iVoler USB Type-C one, I can feel the 50Hz on the casing on feel little electric bites on metal surface. It’s not always, only sometimes, and it’s not really  painful, but it’s annoying. The real matter of the poor shielding is that the wifi is very unstable when the device is plugged. Once again it is not permanent, but files transfer from my NAS shows that the speed fluctuate a lot and that the connection is sometime lost (Might be because I don’t have a Wifi AC Router and I am using Wifi n).
    • The second issue is with the palm rejection : it’s working on my device but not configured correctly. It’s working on the top left two third of the screen but not on the bottom and left part of the screen. It is really weird, but definitiely a software issue as the behavior is always the same, even when I turn the device upside down.

For me both issues are not deal breacker : When I need network speed, I will unplug the device. For websurfing and emails, no problem of network speed. The palm rejection is annoying, but in Sketchable there is a button to desactivate touch input and for rpoductive use in photoshop or Clip Studio Paint, I don’t use touch, only stylus and keyboard shortcut.

Another point that is not really an issue but still is annoying : The screen does not open widely enough : it’s more 100° than 120° and it is not enough for a comfortable use on my lap

    __EDIT__

Forgot one : The two feet on thehinge of the keyboard are not made from soft rubber but more like hard plastique, so the device tends to glide on my desk.

I’m hoping someone can help me with some drivers.  I got my x98 pro a couple days ago and decided to do a fresh install of Windows 10(and get rid of Android for now).  My mistake was doing all this whilst feverish and thus didn’t get all the drivers together.  So the install went smoothly, and once I connected a USB wifi adapter, I was able to download updates, and get most things working.  I don’t have sound, though, and the touch screen is also not working.  I followed the link to the driver pack hosted here, but I get an error(looks like a bandwidth exceeded message).  Can anyone help me out with the necessary drivers?

    Thanks,

    Todd
