    For people that are shopping for a small inexpensive tablet, I have the x80pro, also just a recent purchase.  After having it a month or so and just kind of fumbling around with it, I think I would generally agree with Joe.  If you haven’t pulled the trigger on your order yet, strongly consider moving on.

    I don’t think it’s a total flop, but I can confirm the issue that Joe has with poor wifi.  It’s not a “lottery” issue, but I think it is a design flaw.  Along those lines, I’m finding my tablet only really useful when it’s plugged in and if I take it somewhere, it really needs to be fully charged to become portable.

    I don’t know.  I think I got a good value on $80USD worth of tablet,  but I think there are some problems with this class of tablet that I didn’t consider.  So you can add a USB battery pack type portable charger and a car charger to give you more time plugged in.  For this model, the x80 Pro, it doesn’t come with a USB charger, just the cable.  So if you are like me, you won’t have a good match for charging it.  I have a couple cell phone chargers, but they provide less than an amp of charging, so it makes the problem even more exaggerated.  I think this can be fixed, but it is one more diversion you will need to go on.  I haven’t properly tested it myself yet, but I think it supports a 2A charger.  So I can probably buy one pretty inexpensively, or maybe even just go to a cell phone store and ask if they have a box full of them and get one for free.  But if I’m going to do that, I’m going to want a OTG + Charging Y cable as well.  For me, it just quickly throws the balance off on this tablet for the work to set it up vs what was saved.  After a month, I’m still trying to sort out what I can fit on the tablet’s limited storage to maximize it’s usefulness.

    I’ll make the best of it, and on the plus side, because I am a light user it still may work out for me, but I’m really questioning the value of it.  I think dual boot is a good idea, but after having to go back to Android 5.1 and also running out of space on both sides, it’s pretty clear that you need more than 32GB for it to work.

    If I had to buy over again, I look more at 64GB, confirmed 4+ hours run time unplugged, what cables are included (I bought a micro HDMI cable for the tablet and if someone offered that and OTG + Charging Y cable, it would be much better than the OTG -or- Charging that you have to choose between with the two cables that are included.), and something in the 10″ screen size category.  I think even if I can address all the issues of this tablet (x80 Pro) for less than the cost of a good 64GB 10″ dual boot, it’s hard to see how I will have a better tablet or have saved money.  I’m not so disappointed that I’m going to sell it and start over, but I think I will come out as a fail for this tablet meeting my purpose of use.

    Joe, on my tablet, it gets warm, but not so hot it’s uncomfortable to touch when using it.  That might be a tablet “lottery” issue for build quality.  If I’m not enthusiastic about sourcing all the odds and ends I think are needed for this tablet, I’m even less enthusiastic about opening it up and redoing the heat sink.  With the results Chris gets when he uses a copper shim and better heat sink compound, that might be something to consider for the x80Pro but unless you want to mod it and it’s fun, I would consider your time, the cost of materials, and the risk of breaking or damaging the tablet.  If it was getting hot to the point it was uncomfortable to the touch, I’d consider doing that, or lapping the heat sink, which I’ve done before on desktop PCs and have all the grades of wet/dry sandpaper for already.  Having a trued up, flat heatsink with a mirror finish and artic silver (vs stock compound) has given a measurable improvement for desktop heatsinks, so it seems like it would work for the tablet as well.  My disclaimer is that I haven’t opened it up so I can’t confirm this would apply, but I wanted to throw the idea out there for you to consider.  I found a video of someone taking the back off, and in the last 10seconds or so, it shows you the internals of the tablet.  If you watch the first 6 minutes without fast forwarding, you have more patience than me, but basically it shows someone working around the tablet popping loose the plastic tabs.  Rather than break one of the tabs off, I’m sticking with not messing with it for now.

    Taking the back off an x80Pro:

    Some overview on lapping a heatsink:

    http://www.overclockersclub.com/guides/lapping/

    Here’s a video of someone’s “fix” to the wifi… using an external usb wifi adapter.  Really, really not my solution.  If you have that hanging off the port, for me, eventually you will hit it on something and loosen and damage the port.

    Hang in there, and I hope that as you get your tablet set up, it will get more sorted out to your liking.

    PS.  Sorry for the excess spacing in the post, I just left one line, but it made big gaps.  I’m not sure how to clean it up without bunching everything together.

    [edit] scroll down. the forum software gave some funky formatting lots of empty lines below the Youtube vid.

    An owner of this tablet showing Lubuntu (Ubuntu w/LXDE desktop) running on it.
    TL;DR – he says Linux is 100% working and runs very fast on this device, though dunno if he tested everything – Bluetooth, screen brightness adjust, battery management, etc.

    He used Linuxium’s “ISO respin script” to generate a custom ISO installer which enables creating a Live-USB boot disk running the very latest Linux Kernel.

    You also need to have dual boot to install refind on windows and use easy boot, the performance of linux on this laptop is excellent, at first not working the trackpad and the wifi but this can be solved with a couple of commands, there are still details to check but linux is 100% functional”

    @chris I just watched your review of the jumper ezbook 3s on youtube. Good job. I’m going to ask here as I can’t see the review article yet. Which version of Manjaro did you use for that test? also was it the 32bit or 64bit? and lastly did you have to change any settings in the bios to get it to load? Reason I ask is, I am not having much luck getting any linux distro loading on my ezbook 3 pro. (I’ve tried to isorespin an iso to add Refind but that is giving me errors too) Thanks

    Thanks a bunch CosmicDan. No bother with the Lightroom thing – I don’t actually care that much about the performance of the software as long as it lets me back up to the cloud. One more question if’n you don’t mind – how’s the speed on the full-size USB3 port?

    The fastest USB3 device I have is a SanDisk Extreme USB 3.0 32GB stick, I just ran a CrystalMark and it’s not inhibited at all (the numbers I got are higher than the average rates listed here and that’s on battery power with as much power savings as I can enable, except DDR3 speed set to 1600MHz).

    Pretty much the only drawback of this tablet at it’s price range is the battery. It’s not horrible, but it’s exacerbated by the fact that it will never draw more than ~1.5A to charge, no matter what cable/charger I throw at it (so you’ll have to get used to charging during the day as well as overnight if you use it heavily).

    It also does get a bit warm under load, but I did a heatsink mod and it never goes above 32 degrees C now.

    EDIT: Oh, and WiFi speed is terrible when you have BT enabled. Haven’t been able to figure this out yet, neither have the guys at 4pda from what I can tell.

    You can flash Remix 2 for the x98 plus 0n the Plus 2 (c2d4) with Intel Flash Tool and it mostly works. Also mostly works on the c2e3 and I’d guess the other versions of the Plus 2 as well. I havent gotten internal sound working reliably or very loud and screen dim has range issues. I also flashed Remix 2 for the x16 on the Plus 2 by swapping it’s system.img into the x98 plus and it worked mostly too. Again no internal sound, but camera, auto rotate, touchscreen, wifi, and bt work. I’m still experimenting but I don’t really know what I’m doing, lol. Not worried about bricking it so I’m going to keep playing with it. I’d really love to see the pc version 3 running on this as well, but this gives me something to do and the tablet feels better with Remix vs the stock shipped andriod version imo. If anybody gets it working 100% I’m sure we’ll find out here or at xda.

    How can i flash Remix OS on X98 Plus II?

    i enabled usb debugging mode, i started intel platform flash tool, selected “flash.json”, then i tried with update mode, but nothing..

    Can you kindly post a step by step guide on how you got linux to work on your jumper ezbook3 pro? I am looking to install elementary os of kde neon on mine. Thanks

    Hi Ojo,

    please check my thread here, if that is enough “step by step” for you:

    http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-laptop-and-netbook-25/jumper-ezbook-3-pro-can%27t-boot-from-usb-most-of-common-linux-distros-4175605766/

    There are 2 main problems with ezb3pro concerning Linux installation :

    a) 32bit UEFI, which doesnt want to boot 64bit grub bootloader from installation USB sticks

    b) missing wifi driver

    Both are addressed in the thread above. My succesful install procedure depends on isorespin script by Linuxium, which is capable of make bootable USB image from few official linux install images. Isorespin supports Ubuntu, Mint (maybe Debian, i can’t remeber atm) so you might be lucky with Elementary OS which is afaik kind of Ubuntu offspring. And I think there is always option to install one distro from another running (I have never tried this way).

    I went dual boot way, and at one point I wouldn’t be able to easily continue without Windows. But what’s not easy for me, can be piece of cake for somebody more experienced.

    Let me know, here or there, if everything is clear or you need more details.

    Hi guys! I am UoF in LinuxQuestions and I was able to make Lubuntu 17.04 runnning on EZB3 PRO. I am using it atm. @brad: yes, I am good step by step follower, and I must admit, that I have learned a lot during my struggle to make it work. I picked Lubuntu, because it isn’t resources hungry. When the bare system starts to X, process manager shows 259 MB of RAM used. I would like to know, how much would that be with xubuntu or ubuntu/mate, so if anyone of you installs it, let us know, please. What works (out of the box):

    • audio and video playback in HD from youtube (tested with this favourite song of mine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8fFVOoqepc )
    • bluetooth kinda – I was given a free bt mouse from Jumper (maybe like compensaton for long waiting for the batch with ssd extension slot) and after pairing and setting it is pointing device, it just works, although it isn’t good mouse, it has problem to work on white desk, where my other wireless mouse to usb has no problems at all), but I was unable to send photo from my phone (Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro) to EZB via bt, but it pairs without problems. I made a test of wifi speed with this mouse connected and disconnected, and I didn’t experience speed drop as someone suggested.

    What doesn’t work and needs further examination:

    • touchpad – it doesn’t move cursor at all, instead it clicks (taps). I installed xinput and gpointing-device-settings (further g-p-s), and when I run g-p-s in terminal as root I get lots of X server errors – Bad Atom, bad Atom parameter in terminal. In gui of g-p-s and in xinput is my usb A4Tech mouse listed twice (don’t know why – maybe one id is reciever and the other is the mouse?) and CyPS/2 Cypress Trackpad. If I press Try button in g-p-s I get segmentation fault (it tries to allocate 80GB of ram, lol). It will need some command line tweaks for sure, but to me it doesn’t look like impossible, to make it work.
    • functional keys for audio: fn +F1, fn+F2, fn+F3 – volume up, volume down work, mute works too, but as soon as you mute, you are unable to unmute with any of the keys and must do it with mouse in audio panel in taskbar – again i think it’s matter of settings.

    I have not tested the camera yet. atm I am awaiting SSD and usb3 hub with 100GB LAN support, especially the SSD should be huge boost to performance <3 and I won’t be limited with 64 gb of disk space for dual boot. anyone feel free to ask, but please be patient with me, I still consider myself to be new to linux and moreover I am a family guy with 6month old daughter and I can’t fiddle with notebook all night long as when I was student. ;))

    Hello Internet
    I was about to pull the trigger on the Jumper 3 Pro when I stumbled upon this very promising notebook. Since there wasn’t a thread on this model I thought I’d share my findings:

    At first glance I thought this seemed near perfect (for a budget machine): similar build quality and look to the Jumper 3 Pro, but with addition of USB-C!
    A closer look revealed the following differences: (Specs omitted below are identical on both models.)

    Onda
    ++ USB Type C (charging + audio)
    ++ WiFi 802.11 AC
    ++ Fingerprint reader
    — 4GB RAM
    — No 3.5mm headphone jack

    Jumper
    ++ 6GB RAM
    ++ 3.5mm headphone jack
    — “Proprietary” DC jack

    @Chris
    , I cant speak on behalf of the rest of your readers but I would be thrilled if you were able to review this model.

    …The RTL8723BU wifi/bluetooth module has problems with the wifi when the bluetooth is in use, a well known problem with this unit, wifi is fine when used on its own. As far as Linux is concerned, it would appear not to work but I’m sure in time this will change.

    Yep, it’s been verified to work on Lubuntu 17.04, but you’ll have to jump through some hoops…

    I’ve been using  my Hi12 for some time and really appreciate it!

    But there is some minor issue. The build in wifi module is weak and slow thus I’ve bought external (usb-wifi AC) module COMFAST CF-915AC (it is based on Realtek rtl8812au chip). It works great on Windows, but I can not set it up in Android.

    I found sources for this chip on https://github.com/gnab/rtl8812au and it seems like it’s Makefile contains support for Android X86. I even tried to compile something (ko-module) using Kernel sources provided in this topic – https://github.com/CM-CHT/android_kernel_intel_cherrytrail/tree/cm-12.1  and android ndk. While the compilation seems to be successful (maybe not), the result module doesn’t run on device (insmod commands errors with certification).

    Is it even possible to run this adapter on Hi12 Android? Can someone help me install it?

    Thanks!

    Hi! http://pastebin.com/xD47pAAB Hope it helps ? If I disconnect the wifi usb dongle, it doesn’t recognizes any wifi card. It is the same that ezbook2: I can see the wifi interface but I can’t detect any network.

    Interesting that the output of the command says 16GB RAM is supported, so they can create a device of this price with 16GB RAM if they want.

    Mele, mine is also getting around the 4 hour mark. I’m in the process of trying to get it fixed. Whilst trying to suss the battery I opened the unit up and cleaved my 200gb micro sd in 2, sad times (always remove your micro sd first 🙁 lesson learned), but I discovered my camera isn’t connected. Something severed the tape that joins it to the motherboard with a really clean slice. So I’m going through the warranty procedure to get that amended but also I am presenting them with the battery data.

    I timed 1% under different settings so 3:37 was the base time, 40% brightness, wifi on. Then I timed it again and got 3 minutes. 3 min 23 was without the keyboard. 4m46 was with keyboard but without the brightness on at all and 5m02 with no brightness and wifi. That would push it just up to the 8 hour mark but we can see other people are using it normally and be satisfied.

    I also started to think the issue may be my firewall but it isn’t. I know this because I reset the pc, since I want to send it to them anyway, told it to keep my files. It’s currently got no audio and its’ charge is lasting 2m43 per 1% with no programmes running at all.

    My suspicion is, since there are 2 5000 kwh batteries inside, one of them is duff which would explain the perfect 4 hours or so it can achieve.

    Oh and to anyone having trouble with the supplied charger. Let the wire  sit naturally in your hand and flip it over. It prefers the back of the usb-c to the front. So on the metal of the plug you want the join facing towards you, the other side only gets a charge if the unit is in portrait mode. The back of the wire is also where the serial number is closest.

    My device was charging in less than an hour, which was great, but with any other wire it doesn’t get enough charge so I’m still working on finding an alternate way to charge the device, but hey ho, warranty return we go.

    I love the machine, but I will mourn my micro sd.

    …Personally I think the marriage of Ubuntu and cheap but not too cheap Chinese hardware is a match made in heaven.  I plan to never buy another over-priced MacBook.

    The Cube Thinker (with the 3K screen and better memory than the Chuwi)  would be a more robust Linux machine and I can even imagine getting a VM running for any must have Windows or OS X software.  But I’d rather not spring for one only to find out WiFi is a no go.

    So pretty please someone try it out?  And let’s do what we can to get manufacturers like this to start shipping with Linux pre-installed (instead of Chinese Windows, cmon that’s a no brainer) and advertising Linux compatibility…

    “CHUWI LapBook 12.3 will first sell with Windows 10, and later the company plans to offer an Ubuntu version.” –> http://www.cnx-software.com/2017/04/27/chuwi-lapbook-12-3-is-a-windows-10-ubuntu-apollo-lake-laptop-with-a-2k-display-6gb-ram-up-to-256-gb-ssd-storage/
       Btw, I think the default desktop now going forward for Ubuntu is Gnome. If you want to squeeze out better performance, probably Mate, LXDE, or XFCE are the more lean/faster desktops.  So I personally would use Ubuntu Mate or Xubuntu (XFCE).  Xubuntu is probably gonna be the best supported.  Also there is some advantages to going with a distro with “rolling release” so you can get the latest stable Kernel with bug fixes and best support of the newer hardware/devices and device drivers.
    So Manjaro XFCE is a good choice for that and it seems to run OK from being installed onto and booted from a USB drive (ie, not installed onto the eMMC or SSD/HD) with full data persistence between boots.  But on some devices Manjaro won’t boot from the USB and get a black screen.  No report yet why it boots on some (eg. Chuwi Lapbook 14.1) but not on others.
