Cube Thinker i35: Great laptop but unreliable quality checks

User Rating: 2

I had this laptop for about 3 months now.

The first day I got it I thought it was beautiful.

But then it started to fall apart.

Right from when I opened it, one of the keys were coming out. And it still is to this day but it hasn’t completely come off yet.

And after the first day, the screen was popping off. I thought it wasn’t a problem, I glued it back as it was literally coming out of its frame.

But then the screen died after the 3rd month. I wasn’t even using it much as a laptop, it was more often connected to an external monitor.

Now that’s all it is, is a computer connected to my monitor as it’s own screen is dead, black and completely useless.

I’d really like this to work and I feel bad leaving a bad review as it’s powerful and beautiful and the screen raised my standards as to never go back to a regular 1080p screen.

But yeah. It’s a huge risk buying such an expensive laptop and then ending up with all of these problems.

The return process wasn’t worth it with GearBest as I would’ve had to pay shipping all over again and I didn’t want to risk taxes etc. so I got about $50 in-store credit.

  1. Hi, I was wondering if I could buy a motherboard and power supply for my cube thinker i35. It overcharged with a usb-c charger…I need to replace the motherboard and the power supply, but I can’t find any piece.

  2. I have the same “screen popping out from frame” issue. Could anybody suggest a flexible I could use to fix it before it gets damaged? Could I use normal sealing silicone (the same you use to seal windows)? It would be strong but possible to remove if needed in the future…

  3. That’s the thing about Cube Thinker, its screen is what sold me and seeing how mine is no longer working I just may invest in a xiaomi pro!

But the other thing is that Xiaomi’s 15 inch screen is not only 1080p but you mentioned you could see the pixels if you looked closely, that sounds terrible coming from a Thinker!

So basically if you were in my position and couldn’t fix the thinker, you would probably get the Xiaomi Pro?

Yea I can’t wait to see what else comes out with this display, it’s fantastic and can’t see myself downgrading after getting a taste!

Thanks for the response and follow up. 😀

  4. Hi Chris

Yes I’m the broken keyboard guy 😀

Thanks for publishing my review (unlike gearbest) and even responding with some help, I know you’re busy so I really do appreciate this!!

I’ve been on a few road trips as well with mine but i’ve only used mine 10-20% as a laptop (outside of the office), and 80% as a computer desk set up with a type C dock connected to a ultra-wide monitor.

My screen went completely black after I pushed the lid so it was nearly 180 degrees. I can see the outline of my desktop in a pitch black room so I’m 100% sure it is a loose ribbon somewhere.

I have two questions if you don’t mind:

    1. Would these ribbons be found under the laptop area (where the thermals are, as I did follow your video for that) and not in the screen area?
I glued my screen into the frame so I don’t think I’ll try to take out the screen from it’s frame to check the ribbons.

    2. Assuming I can’t fix this, and I’ve never had such a beautiful laptop, should I go for Xiaomi’s 13.3 or do you think I should wait for something that has comparable specs / screen to Thinkers because I don’t see anything that can match Cube Thinker?

I think it would be silly of me to buy the same laptop again though it is still a possibility!! Especially considering the price will drop considerably with the upcoming 11.11 sale.

I’m not in a rush as I still have my Teclast x2 as my backup daily driver so I can wait for something else.

That’s the thing you’ve been using Cube Thinker in place of Xiaomi’s 12.5, so in my eyes, even the 13.3 would be a downgrade as I was really appreciating Cube’s screen!

I’m always checking your site for the latest rumors on laptops / tablets but I don’t want anything less than Cube Thinker really.

Thanks again Chris, you’re the man!

    • Hi, I never hide and not publish honest user reviews, I can understand sellers would do that as they want only good press. But that is BS.

      1. The ribbon for the screen will be in that area, it’s a long wide one. It’s possible that Cube has it glued down and you then have to remove the resin either end. If it’s too hard to leave it. If you can still see some the whole screen and it’s dark it could be a failed backlight. But more likely a cable I think.

      2. The Xiaomi 13.3 is a great laptop, but the Mi Notebook Pro is even better, the keyboard is great once I got used to it. I sold mine recently and bought the 16GB i7 model. But I miss already miss it, the Cube thinker i35 keyboard is still fine on mine but that short key travel isn’t great. However, that screen is why I always go back to it. It’s hands down the best screen I’ve seen and used. The touch accuracy is perfect and so responsive, then the brightness and colors also really good. Like 95% sRGB. Overall that and the 8GB of RAM at 1888Mhz the new 7Y30 combined with the type-c dock is why I use it over my Mi Notebook’s 4GB and 6Y30.

It’s just so hard going from that screen to my 12.5″ Mi Notebook’s 1080p while a great 1080p isn’t a match for it, nothing is. Even the new Surface Book 2 13.5″ uses the same screen 2nd year in a row.

I want to see Teclast or Chuwi now use this panel with the new gen of Core M3’s with an improved design, backlit keyboard and Thunderbolt 3 etc for next years new models.

  5. Thanks for the update and review. So you’re the same guy that had the bad keyboard I remember and now this the screen is dead??? WOW. Not good. Open it up and check the ribbon cables are all connected. I still have my Thinker i35 since the day I got, it replaced my Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air 12.5″ Core 6Y30 model. I still have it but prefer the amazing screen on the Thinker i35. I might do an updated video about mine, but my unit is fine. I just got lucky I guess, it has also been on a few road trips and is working fine. I also mostly use it with a type-c dock and then for watching a few movies and signing stuff using my Surface Pen. Fingers crossed my holds up and does not fail on me. But it sounds like you got unluck alright.
