Summary:

I’m enjoying my time with the Zenfone 3 Ultra, sure it’s not a mobile for everyone due to its size (Obviously!). But what it is, is a media powerhouse in your pocket if it fits. The huge screen is super immersive, perfect for media consumption on the go. The sound is excellent thanks to those dual speakers. Maybe one of the best on a mobile. And the 23MP camera takes a very fine picture.

But ASUS’s ZenUI is bloated, very much so. They try to force so many pre-installed apps upon you, It almost ruins  the experience. Luckily most of the bloat can be disabled and some even uninstalled.

And I found the battery life didn’t live up to what a 4600mAh battery should be capable of. At least it does charge quickly, 60% in just 45 minutes.

Pros:

  • Solid metal build
  • Fast and fluid performance
    Perfect for media
  • Bright 1080p screen (452 lux)
  • Some of the best loudspeakers
  • Great rear camera
  • Decent front camera
  • 4k video recording
  • Quick to charge
  • Can charge other devices
  • Type-C display output
  • Good DPI setting used

Cons:

  • Way too much preinstalled bloatware!
  • Battery life should be better
  • No 60 fps 1080p video recording
  • Some auto focus issues in video
  • Awkward volume button location
  • Type-C display out hit & miss
  • No NFC
  • No IR

This unit is yet available to buy at the time of this review. I got this one earlier from a leaked release in Taiwan. But you’ll be able to pick it up in few weeks from GearBest very soon for $470 (3/32GB model) to $571 (4/64GB model)

  1. love your reviews, thanks. I have just bought this phone and can’t wait to check it all out.

    • Loved it, I regret selling it as I enjoyed it so much. But I just couldn’t handle the size of it. I like to be able to carry phone in my front pocket. That was the deal breaker for me.

  2. Thank you!
BTW, I love that you post images samples in high resolution!
