Unfortunately, I’ve had to impose some download limits on even the Google Drive storage used for this site. Running into countless user limit errors from Google drive was the result of too many people downloading the same file over and over. Google was putting some kind of limit on this like. When the site had only 10,000 visitors a day it could chew through 2-3TB in data a day a year ago. Huge 8GB files like Windows images used to be hosted on this server and caused huge headaches with bandwidth overage bills. Now even Google it seems is upset with the data used.
So the solution, for now, is limited downloads per user of 10 files a day. If you encounter an error message, please come back in 24 hours and download again.

How much data are we talking about at rest, sitting there?
Chris G
Around 300+ GB

One other suggestion, how about Amazon Unlimited Everything? https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/pricing

Given that manufacturers like Pipo host their files on Baidu, you’re doing a lot better. I’ve copied the Pipo W1S files onto a dedicated mega.nz account which will hopefully help someone. https://mega.nz/#F!tspmzYYb!ZczuryErr2r23KlLuPFP6A
Hopefully that’s ok to post here? Also, if you do go the torrent route I’ll do some seeding too.

If you are looking for a low cost way of making files available across the internet via direct download or a Torrent seedbox you may want to take a look at https://www.scaleway.com. The cost will mainly depend on the amount of storage you are going to need, but the starting cost of a X86 VPS or dedicated ARM microserver is ā¬3pm(plus VAT).
Chris G
Thanks will keep that in mind.

Well done. That’s a lot. I am sure if you send the manufacturers a request, with that traffic, they would send you free tablets and phones. Or have you tried already?
Chris G
I’ve tried and just get bumped around press agencies. Part of the problem is I’ in Spain I think.

Chris, you can do what many of the popular Linux distro’s do and create Torrents for those files. This could significantly reduce the download bandwidth used for direct file downloads.
Chris G
The problem is who is going to seed them all? Just tested out Linux Mint on the Cube i7 Book, video coming soon for you. Works fine, just no screen brightness control.

If you can afford it get a seedbox, there are cheap sites where you can get one starting at 10-15⬠and seed from there. You don’t need to provide a permanent high speed seed for every torrent and for the most recent/popular ones the users will help.
The cheapest ones I know are from kimsufi(the same company that runs ovh). In theory they have one option for 5⬠but it’s extremely hard to get one due to the limited units and high demand.

For now it’s Google drive which is only around $10 a month now for 1000GB. Part of the issue is I’m on 4G/LTE data plan where I am and have data caps. So I have to also work around that. Fiber optic 300mbs is in town, but I need to rent or rent an office in town for that which isn’t cheap.

I wonder if OneDrive has similar limits. Also, I believe you could get 1TB of OneDrive storage quite a bit cheaper using an office365 personal account.
Jonathan
Have you looked at web seeding? You provide a backup HTTP URL for when there are no other seeders so the file is as available as it is with your current method but you might have some of the bandwidth load reduced.
Law
Just out of interest Chris, how many visits per day are you currently averaging?
And do they and you tablets for free to review yet or you still have to buy them. I hope with so many hits they would send them for free
Chris G
About 40k, only free stuff is mostly battery packs and car chargers š The odd cheap tablet.
