AllDoCube Freer X9 – 2560 x 1600 8.9″ Android Tablet

AllDoCube Freer X9 – 2560 x 1600 8.9″ Android Tablet

My review of the Freer X9 is now online.

Edit 16th of October: I’ve just ordered one from Banggood, so will review this one in about two week when it arrives, it’s coming via the free (slow) post method but tax-free from me.

AllDoCube (Previously Cube) has a new smaller Android tablet that’s now out. The Freer X9. It has a fully laminated 2560 x 1600 resolution screen, 4GB of RAM MediaTek 8173 with PowerVR GX6250 GPU, 64GB, Wireless AC and runs Android 6.0. I’ve reviewed a tablet with this CPU before and while you might think that SoC wouldn’t have enough power to drive a 2560 x 1600 screen you’ll be surprised. While sure it won’t be as smooth as 1920 x 1200 or 1080p, the games I’ve tested with 4GB and the MTK8173 were playable.

The tablet has large bezels judging from the images and comes with a dated Android 6.0 ROM, so far these look to be the negatives of this unit and the 5800mAh battery. Of course at only 8.9″ it’s probably hard to fit in anything larger than that. The build is metal and it also has a 13MP and 5MP camera set up.

Type-C port is also there, dual speakers and MicroSD card slot. I think for the current $169 USD it’s selling for it’s not looking bad at all.

Here are the Freer X9 press images (below) What do you guys think? Worth a hands-on/review or one to skip? I also have my Teclast T10 review coming, currently, work in progress. That also has a 2560 x 1600 OGS screen, but with slimmer bezels and 10.1-inches.

Chinese tablet news, hands on videos and reviews of the latest Chinese tablets. I don’t review or cover just anything, only tablets I think are good enough and worth the attention.

  1. Android 6.0 at the end of 2017? No, gracias.

  2. My unit from Banggood just arrived, I’ll have an unboxing or review up in a few days. Just working on a couple of others things before I move to the Freer X9

  3. Chris we all will be waiting for review

    • I have the tracking number, it will be a few weeks out from now. Normally about 15 days.

      • Heads up, I received the Freer X9 from Gearbest, came with a preinstalled international rom with playstore etc, but also noticed its got that known adups Fota spyware installed (the Wireless update app that you cant disable or block as it re-enables itself at every reboot)
Really need to find a way to root this thing

        • Not good, mines coming from Banggood so i’ll see if I have the same shop ROM issue on mine.

  4. Hej Chris,

is there any Windows Tablet with a 4:3 or 3:2 Screen between 8 and 10′ comming?
At the Moment im looking at the teclast x98 plus II but it’s a bit old and a newer Apollo lake chip would be nice.

  5. I question the need for these not-quite ultra cheap tablets when you can get a galaxy tab s 8.4 new on ebay for $200 with an AMOLED screen, decent samsung processor, and real support.

    • Coming from someone who just bought another Tab S 8.4 as my traveling unit, this is an excellent point. It is still the best screen I have ever used and everything works as it should. I was avoiding getting another used device, but even new units have their problems.

    • the first tab S 8.4 isn’t support to much in the community.. just 10.1”. battery is smallar for the display and snapdragon 800 and 2 gb of ram isn’t enough.

      • You might be thinking of the Tab Pro 8.4. It has 2GB memory while the Tab S 8.4 has 3GB. Also, the Tab Pro doesn’t have much support in the community while the Tab S 8.4 has plenty.

If you’re a power user (I’m not…I use mine mostly for messaging and media) I understand the Snapdragon 800 being an issue. For my daily use, no issues with the power on tap.

        • my fault for ram! i spoke for tab s anyway! in xda there are maybe 2 stable rom for 8.4 And 10 for 10.1. i have tablet since 2 year and for a quite use is good but when you have 5 app in background all is laggy

  6. What’s with the pseudo-English marketing copy? They could spend a few hundred dollars and eliminate such stupidity like: “will add your life more surprise” or “this goodness can also be shown in game playing”. “To meet customers’ high expectations” is not achieved.

    • I know, seems to happen a lot. Some of the time it’s just the retailers using photoshop to add their own poor translation. Not a good look!

      • I thought of starting a company that helps Chinese and Taiwanese manufacturers translate and market their goods to Western and English speaking markets, but they have 0 interest. They think their translation and marketing is great, plus they have no budget for anything since they operate on razor thin margins.

  7. Nice! Finally something Im looking for. I need a tablet for multimedia, surfing and reading. Reading pdfs, epubs and office documents. I wanted to get FNF iFive mini 4s but now I saw this.
Do you guys think 8.9 inch is too large for reading in bed with 1 hand? 360ish gram while iFive is only 20 gram lighter. Hmm I don’t know I guess I will wait for reviews. What do people use for this purposes (reading, surfing)? I have i7 stylus but it’s not handy to use it horizontally (too heavy and wide plus touch is bad (windows)).

    • Well I can just one hand the ifive mini 4s in portrait mode, the vertical res on this is much the same but the bezels are pretty big so you will need big hands.
      I have fairly short fingers.

      • There are various stands and holders available for both phones and tablets. Do a Google Image search for “tablet handle”. There are various mounting techniques used to mount them on the back of a tablet and allow for one hand holding.

  8. Chris, i and others will be waiting for reviews of Teclast T10 and this AllDoCube Freeze X9
Thank you for you work, man!

  9. GPS ?
    e-compass ?

  10. How do you think it will compare for speed to the ifive mini4S?

    • Badger, just looking at specs I’d say X9 should be significantly faster.
Guess Antutu-scores isn’t everything but FNF tics in around 40 000 and this has had over 60 000.
Not sure how the larger screen resolution would play in though – updating 2048 x 1536 vs 2560×1600.
Double RAM and ROM was nice too and and far as previews goes the OS seems to come limited with bloat.

  11. I’d say skip, purely due to the large bezels 🙂

  12. Hi Chris, I actually started writing a forum post with regards to this. I cancelled my preorders for Lenovo P8 and FNF iFive when I saw this.
Glad to see even your small write-up here “confirming” the chip isn’t too slow.

I’ve seen it got antutu scores just above 60 000 and the 4GB / 64GB+SD got me happy enough for my intended use of mainly browsing/movies.

Preordered it from GB a few days back at $169 then they threw in trifold cover and tempered screen protector.

Second reason I cancelled last two orders though was GB has been slipping on shipping dates. The Lenovo and FNF got pushed forward some 2-3 weeks respectively. So far I’ve seen this Freer being pushed a few days too – listed as shipping ~2nd Oct hopefully they can stick to that.

    • Teclast T10 also looks good now working on the review of that one, but I can see you’re after a smaller size. Shipping dates will slip because from the 30th to 8th of Oct it’s a national Chinese holiday and there will be delays in every store. Which is why I’ve been rushing to try and get my Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro shipped out before the 30th.

  13. I just can’t understand why all Chinese manufacturers have abandoned the 4 /3 format (xiaomi and fnf being exceptions on very little scale). At some point I will be obliged to change my son’s good old talk 9x and… No replacement at sight beside the much more expensive asus 3s10.

    • I heard the cost and supply of the 9.7″ 4:3 was the reason for it, why Cube and Teclast, in the end, dropped it. But if they got more units I don’t see why Teclast wouldn’t bright back a new X98, I’m hoping with a MediaTek Helio X25 or similar.

      • This is interesting and logical with mainly Apple and Samsung using huge quantities of those screens. Thank you for that info.

  14. Selfishly, I would like a review because I’m a fan of your style and I’m more interested in tablets than notebooks. But I can see why you would ask, given that the specs aren’t that impressive. So appreciate if you can, but understand if you and others don’t see the value.

    • I’ll see what happens if I get a small gap maybe I’ll order one to take a look.
