Teclast X98 Air III Review (Video)

Teclast X98 Air III Review

Teclast X98 Air III Review

I’ve just finished up reviewing my Teclast X98 Air III, it Teclast’s budget Retina quad-core tablet. This model is the single OS Android 5.0 32GB version. It’s a mere $125 from Banggood.com with their coupon c930c6, so dirt cheap.

Since it’s a Bay Trail Z3735F, its a step down from the Z3736F in the X98 Air 3G & Air II in terms of performance. Here’s is my full video review:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=

Pros:
Very cheap, great build, excellent screen
Can be flashed to Win 10 / Android
Decent battery life

Cons:
Poor speakers, Teclast launcher lags
Gen7 GFX struggles with demanding games

  1. I need help for my Telcast X98 Air III. Did a factory reset and now it is stuck at “Intel Inside” while booting.

I have the same problem as in this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdGW54Tjdjg

I have contact Gearbest.com and they have told me to wait 5 business days for an answer after going back and forth with them for two days.

  2. i have some serious problems with my camera! when using skype i get an very bad picture. do i have an faulty product or is it just the camera of this tablet?

  3. Can anyone help me? Bought one of these tablets and cannot for the life of me get it to connect to WIFI. It see’s the network however just go through the usual connecting, authenticating, obtaining IP address procedure, it just says connecting then saved then after a few minutes says authentication error. I have factory rest the tablet, tried to connect using the WPD button and changed a few settings on the router all without success

  5. Hi Chris,
Any further news about Win 10 on Air III 32G ? Do you have time for work on it ?

  6. Thank thee Chris for your review always a pleasure!
<3 for showing the SD Card, I hope your card be ok. I did that while a file was open and the mbr was corrupted because of that!

  7. Hi Chris.

Have you tried to flash Mireks (or Technights) custom ROM on this?

    • Yes Mirek v6. Couldn’t get it to flash.

      • hey man, i follow you so much.
I’ve an air iii 32gb, but something in the kernel drains all the battery, almost 68%, more than the screen.
I don’t know what to do..
Root? Does it exit a guide for m5c5 ?
Or there are custom rom for it?
        Or any update?
Glad for any answers by you

  8. Which is best choice if you want dual OS, no heat and if you do not need to play games?
Air 3g? Air II? or Air III but can you install dual os?
    Thanks

    • 64GB Air III or X98 Air 3G depends on what style you like.

  9. Hi Chris,

Are you planning to install and review Win 10 on this device ?

  10. I figured out how to increase the GPU power for gaming – if anybody is interested, please check this forum post: http://techtablets.com/forum/topic/x98-air-iii-264g-dual-boot-just-in-today/#post-15895

    • Thanks for the info, clocked to the max it should hopefully run those games that run in native screen resolutions much more fluid.

      • It is definitely worth doing, i get around 6800 points in the Ice Storm Extreme benchmark as opposed to 4775 in your review, and around 14800 in the Ice Storm Unlimited test (10363 in your review). I lack the games you use for your review so I cannot go ahead and test how they perform, but it should be virtually identical to the X98 Air II/3G.

      • how did you root the tablet,i tried rooting mine( 64gb dual OS) it shows root successfully done using vroot, however when I check it with root checker it shows not rooted.Any clue why?

  11. How did you get poor speakers? They are loud, and very clear, on the air III’s I got. Between the good screen, the solid build, the hdmi, the lightness/thiness, and what I thought were excellent speakers, better than any other chinese tablet I’ve used myself yet, I think this is super solid for the price.

Just going to watch your video now, because I just tested the Air III speakers and was surprised at how good they were…

    • I’ll agree they are lacking in bass, but most tablets speakers don’t have bass. But I thought they were loud and very clear. Actually versus my listening (and video), yours sound quite tinny. Distortion etc. Which is really weird. Different models? IDK.

Yeah, that sounds distorted versus what I just tested today….Which is confusing…Mine just arrived today, so perhaps yours was an early release?

      • Mine is one of the first models, but check if your one is a M5C5? Could be different speakers used on different batches.

        • It appears to have the same code M5C5. Although I swear the speakers sound different. I was genuinely impressed by the ones on my couple of air III’s, its very clear and loud, although no bass (I do demo videos for tablets, and I played mine back after yours too, defo sounds different – yours has pretty intense distortion and mine was only recorded on a camera). Your video sounded tinny.

Curious. Maybe the QC is a bit iffy? IDK.

          • I’ve opened mine up, it’s got the same speakers all the X98 series have. But maybe mine are just seconds? Poor QC?

    • The other thing I really liked was the weight and thin-ness. It weilds a bit easier in one hand than most 9.7 inch tablets, which is really quite nice (I am a fan of one handed use, which puts me off most 9.7s).

Anyway, I was surprised, I think its a cool tablet, and I can see why they went for older chips – its fast enough, lean enough, cheap enough, kind of does everything right – for most android users (obviously gamers not so much, or techies, or windows fans).

      • For the price is a really good deal, I do like how solid it feels now, zero movement or flex and it’s the same shell my X98 Plus has arriving today or tomorrow.

I think they are using old Z3735F stock. It’s an okay processor, just a bit slower when it comes to the latest games that run in 2048 x 1536 as seen in my vid they struggle to get fluid frame rates.

        • I might actually end up using one of those pluses myself. The one handed light feel and study casing, plus a cheap price with a decent amount of RAM is attractive. Either that or the Hi10.

I heard they capped the GPU – although baytrail and high resolution, maybe thats just to prevent overheating/overloading, gaming on 9.7 retina can be easy to manage well even with new hardware.

    • I have a Surface Pro 4 now and they have really good tablet speakers loud with some bass. The Chuwi vi10 speakers are also louder and have a hint of bass. These don’t, most tablet speakers are rubbish, these are poor at best. They aren’t anywhere as loud as the Chuwi Vi10’s. At least the headset 3.5mm audio output is clear and loud.

      • Probably the last frontier of low-mid market tablets in a way. Even in headphones you have to pay a little bit more for audio quality, no matter what. Same with smart phones generally, a premium phone can have super crisp audio, but you’d struggle to find cheapers ones that do. Good to hear about the chuwi vi10’s because I like chuwi products. Generally pretty damn solid.

        • The Xiaomi headphones I have phone sound good for the price. They have a new hybrid dual driver in ear headset that looks good, only about $18 too.

  12. Is it capable of handling emulators such as for the ps2 or the Dreamcast?

    • Yes but it would be a little slow with some games. I would go with an X98 Pro for that.
